I think Lewis was more confident of Frank running out of steam if anything. He knew he wouldn't last the course at that pace.
I'm not so sure about that. The pace of Bruno's fights against Coetzer and Williams was probably as fast, if not faster than that set in his Lewis bout. Frank's conditioning and output, by that time, was fairly high and consistent (at least over 9-10 rounds). It would have been short-sighted of Lewis to bank on Bruno emptying his tank, before the final bell. I genuinely think Lewis was surprised by Frank, who had more or less neutralized his Right-hand, and so he needed a bit of time to work Frank out; then find and take his opportunity. Ultimately, Bruno didn't run out of steam against Lewis. He just misread the situation when, in Frank's eyes, it seemed he had Lewis in trouble. He was always susceptible to a Left-hand, at the best of times (particularly, when thrown short to mid-range), but he usually took them and got away with it. In this case, however, he really didn't anticipate Lewis at all, who slingshotted the Left from quite wide (if I recall correctly) with considerable effect. So, I wouldn't say Bruno had gassed by then; he was just hurt. Current AJ would not have survived either of those guys.
