I know he fought Leonard and I know his career was cut short after he was shot. Other than that I know nothing about his career.

How good was he? What could he have achieved if his career was not cut short?

Exactly, he was never beating Leonard or coming close to doing so. Roger was world class though, and maybe Floyd senior could have been or close to, but as it stands no.

You can see where Floyd got some of that defensive style from...He gave a young Leonard a hell of a fight..Had a great jab and gave him trouble with his aggression.

He would be a potential titlist in weaker eras...a solid contender in his day.

At his best he was rated a top 5 contender in the welterweight division.

Floyd Sr performed fairly well against Leonard but was shot in the leg afterwards which derailed his career. He also fought Marlon Starling twice.

I believe he was shot shortly after the Leonard fight which is why he went more than a year without fighting again.

It would be quite amazing if true but I don't think he could have fought with that kind of an injury.
