How Good is Pacquiao at Using Lateral Movement to Get Angles for Attacking?

:huh i dont know how you'd come to that conclusion. As long as Floyd has his feet planted the angles will always be a factor. And the bottom line is, angles or not standing in front of pac for an extended period like that is never a good idea. Its been proven time and time again that lateral movement is essential against pacquiao, and floyd has habits of walking in lines and relying on his upperbody for defense rather than his feet. In that sense he's sort of tailor made for pac , but his IQ/ability/counter punching/size help fill in that gap , which is why it's an interesting fight.

Yes, he didn't bother to clinch with Zab. He threw punches up close instead where Zab couldn't get off. I'm talking about smothering as being at a close range where you can get off, but they can't. I'm not confident in emmanuel's abilities to fight with little distance.

From Smokin' Joe Frazier. Southpaws aren't southpaws any longer once you get close enough on them. This reason is why many southpaws maintain an amount of distance between themselves and their opponents.

Have you watched emmanuel Solis? Solis who is far from elite or slick and Black was able to make emmanuel look sloppy with upper body movements.

I'm not either, he'd have to get real lucky if Floyd is able to cut the ring off on him; this is why I think mobility is so important. Floyd hasn't ever tried to pressure someone who can move and escape angles well, and Pacquiao has shown he's competent at that. Pacquiao playing counter-puncher once/if Floyd adjusts to pressuring would be interesting to see.

But he wasnt standing that close to him in the gif you posted. I agree that Pacuqiao isnt a good in fighter but that's not going to be much of a factor in the fight anyway. PAcquiao is very good at bouncing out of the from the inside as well and giving himself space to punch. It's just not a smart idea to try to infight or pressure pac in any circumstance, really. Solis was a long time ago, not really relevant and it's different styles.

You don't need to be THAT close all up in they AZZ Julio Cesar Chavez swarmer style to make a lefty's angles more manageable. Take the Floyd-Zab fight, Floyd wasn't really inside with his shoulder to Zab's chest, but he got close enough.

Juan also had success with his upper body Mexican slickness and head movement against emmanuel. It wasn't like he was ONLY shaking his AZZ and salsa dancing laterally to protect himself.

If Pac was any good at it, he wouldn't have a problem whenever guys turn him.

Just because Morales and Marquez were able to beat/compete with him in this respect doesn't mean anyone can. If Pacquiao weren't any good at this, he would have been knocked out by now post-Roach considering his other flaws.

Pac fought opponents at the higher weights. These opponents were not used to fight brawlers with the speed and footwork of a fast featherweight. Its just that Pac maintained his speed while not compromising his speed. Who else successfully made through this? Just a few like Floyd, Duran, Oscar, and some successful fighters. So, Pac's lateral movements to get angles were so effective against "slow, big fighters". DUH.

Look at JMM on his 3rd fight against Pac. He improved his power while not compromising his speed and still very competitive at 147 against Pac. If JMM's 130 version fought the present Pac, he would have been ktfo (and that's what we used to predict pre JMM-Pac3). The JMM of today would have been very successful against top 140/147, well except Floyd (Obvious ba). But JMM's power is still subpar against Pac's power comparing to competing at the higher weights.

You can fight Pacquiao up close safely, it's just dangerous getting and keeping him there. Floyd can use Andre Ward type tactics and tie him up at close to keep him in one spot and to keep him from getting in leverage while FLoyd goes to work with his free arm

What gives Pacquiao a "special" footwork is his FOOTSPEED.
Ain't nothing faster than those pair in the biz right now.

Regrading JMM, I think we can all agree that JMM has the superior footwork, escpecially off the counter.
Pac's footwork only shines if he is doing his in and out movement.

Marquez employs it a lil better but Pac has way too much footspeed for most of his opponents anyway so it doesnt even matter.

It's not just footspeed... pac is great at bouncing in and out / to the side, turning his opponents, feinting / pivoting etc. These are all boxing techniques. Pac has a problem cutting the ring off against somebody who uses lateral movement, and that's always been a bad habit of his.

check out 1:33 of this video to see an example of his footwork (not footspeed, footwork), as he turns Cotto around 180 degrees while letting off punches.
