Alan Minter was an excellent middleweight. He just seemed to have bad luck on his side. He got robbed in the Munich Olympic Games against the West German fighter. It was considered at the time to be a scandalous verdict (like Jones-Park in Seoul in 1988). As someone mentioned, nearly all his losses as a pro were due to cuts. Once he seemed to put the cuts behind him and got on a winning streak, he fought Angelo Jacupucci, who died after their fight from Minter's blows. He finally got a title shot against Antuofermo, and most felt he lost the decision. When he earned the nod, it was sort of like Tim Bradley getting the verdict over Pacquaio. Most didn't give him the credit and didn't consider him the real champion. However, in the rematch, Minter chopped up Antuofermo and won a lop-sided fight via TKO. Since I brought up Bradley, I'd say Minter was probably considered in his day like Bradley is now. Of course, Bradley hasn't suffered the cuts losses. But he's a guy you don't think of as the best Pound-for-Pound, and he struggles with some guys he probably shouldn't, but he's world-class. That's what Alan Minter was like, too.
I've always admired the studious, disciplined way that Minter boxed his way to a decision,..no matter how close it was,..over Antuofermo...and the ease in which he chopped up Vito...controlling him all the way in the rematch.
Minter and his team had a number code for the punches he would use vs Antuofermo in that first fight...much like the code Cus D'Amato developed and was used most famously by Jose Torres.
Yeah,...and how that sleazy movie could have conned and mislead people into thinking that Carter was robbed is beyond me.
I wonder what Carter thought of being betrayed as a victim ??? Beating Giardello was easily Terry Downes biggest victory
Sorry, but being an adult in that time and seeing Minter I can tell ya: Bradley never saw the day he was good as Minter.
Alan on his night was very good, but sometimes his own worst enemy, a great chin, but lousy eye tissue, Alan often let his emotions rule his head rushed in and paid the price in cuts, a perfect example was his first fight with Gretian Tonna, when carelessly walking into a nose-cutting Haymaker and getting stopped, in the return Alan Boxed with controlled Venom and had Tonna quitting ... I suspect he could have beaten Hamsho if he had got the Fight and Flight mix right, Having shook Hamsho to his boots Alan went on the back foot again, and you could tell Hamsho's Aggression would be rewarded on the scorecards, If Alan was Controlled and you could not Cut him ... He could be a hard nights work for most, Only a few nights back I watched a replay of him brushing aside the respected Tony Licata
... but, but .... Hagler only fought 3 good opponents, and they all came up from lower weight classes ...
I dont know about alcholism.hes always looked smart when ive seen him out and about at shows.in fact ive never seen him not in a suit.he is 65 now. The hagler fight was an anomaly for minter.usually he was a smooth boxer albeit in a stiff stand up european style . He and his supporters riled hagler up,played right into his hands in motivating him.than minter went out fighting aggressively rather than boxing.he actually stunned hagler for a split second in the first than hagler destroyed him. If minter had boxed smartly he may have lost on points in a close one.he really could box.but more likely hed have been stopped in 10 or 11. I think alan would have taken another crack at marvin after the hamsho fight.but would have been destroyed again as hagler by than had his number
Alan always liked a drink even when he was in his pomp. I remember him rocking Hagler too but me and you are in a minority I think. I thought he beat hamsho and thought he'd beat Sibson handily but my amateur boxing coach at the time picked Sibson and I had egg on my face. I really liked Minter and think he's underrated, I even boxed in the same red Gola boots as him and Stracey. I think one of his better fights was busting up Gratien Tonna as well as his trilogy with the rough, tough Kevin Finnegan.
You said it pal.the finnegan fights were amazing.the atmosphere was only rivalled by groves froch i think.
the Minter Finnegan (both pairs brothers too) rivalry seemed to only be in the ring, didn't they all enjoy a few jars together ?? Did you see any of their fights, I only listened to them on the radio ??
I liked him and thought he was a skilled and tough guy .. like said multiple times his trouble was tissue paper skin .. he was a tough SOB .. even the fight where Hagler destroyed him Alan kept his feet and was game ..
