Look at Ortiz's record and you will get a sense of his worth. Two title reigns totalling 7 and a half years. 19 title defences and five world champions defeated. Ortiz was a consummate pressure fighter with all the tricks of the trade. He hit adequatley hard and could also take a very good punch. He won the 118 Title in 1942 as part of a run of 46 fights when his only came against Willie Pep. After 15 defences of his Title, he lost it to Harold Dadein 46, but regained it two months later and made four defences, before finally getting outpointed by Vic Toweel in his 115th fight, in high altitude Johannesburg, when he was almost 34.
Incredibly talented, but sad to say a bit like fellow Southern California Icon fighters. Bobby Chacon & Mando Ramos. Too much partying & carrying on during thier prime's...
Was watching his 3rd encounter with Castillo last night, what a brawl. Alway's was exciting when they hooked up. Most rank him in the top tier of the Bantamweight division, not sure he would make my top 100 list though.
