we're not overrating him. Hagler does a lot better than most of those bozos listed including the oft beat Lamotta. the man is just too short!

    and no power? forget it

Fullmer, Lamotta, Gibbons, Giardello, etc are all on the lower echelon of middleweights that held their title for one defense and had to turn it over becuz they lacked the brains, & talent to hold onto it

Hopkins does a little better but couldnt handle slick fast guys. Hagler would give him a boxing lesson before tkoing him

The epitome of not knowing what your talking about:

Gibbons never held a title. That doesnt mean at his best he couldnt have beaten Hagler. Giardello maybe only had one defense but that has a lot more to do with the fact that he got his title when he was WAY past his prime. His style combined with his toughness, speed, and timing would have been a difficult task for Hagler to solve. Fullmer defended his title 7 times. He was also a better at just about everything than Antuofermo. If Hagler blew up against Vito then he better wear a diaper against Fullmer because hes going to be shitting bricks when Gene is coming on strong. LaMotta, like Giardello, was already on the downside of his career and was a lot better fighter than Antuofermo ever hoped to be (he had two defenses by the way). Either way its pretty funny that you name four guys who are in the HOF and considered four of the greatest MWs of all time and call them "on the lower echelon of middleweights" and lacking brains and talent... Or that Lamotta is too short... even though he stood an inch taller than the faded Duran who had Hagler intimidated and also had an inch more of reach (which he used to outjab sugar ray robinson, I wonder if robinson thought as little of jake as you do).

blew up aginst Vito? I recall Hopkins blowing up against Jones & Taylor

Robinson blowing up against Turpin. In fact all of them blew up at one time or another

its just that Hagler blew up a lot less

To be honest, I think you both make good points. Hagler was largely consistent and did everything well; he could box the sluggers and kayo the boxers. I do think there were fights that showed he was beatable, however. Roldan was giving him hell, so that gives the likes of Fullmer and Tiger a shot at Marvin in my book. Not saying they were the same as Roldan, but they were strong and aggressive.

Other fighters like Cerdan and Robinson would be great fights, too. As I say, I am a huge fan of Hagler's, but the Middleweight division has been so strong over the years. I think he's top 5 and certainly belongs with the best. The Duran fight counts against him, but he still beat Roberto, albeit in a cautious way.

I don't want to linger on this too long as the other posters will rightly complain that we are using up space with off topic posts, but what you have said is testament to their song writing ability.

Further testament is ( like Dylan ) the amount of other artists who have covered those songs in their own styles.

But believe me as a performing band they were average at best.

They simply didn't perform to audiences of upwards of 250,000 people like the Led Zepps, and Lynyrd Skynyrds and Rolling Stones of the pop / rock world. Most of their work was done in studios.

You should watch the fight sometime. Up close was where Duran had to pull out of after not being able to cut it with the bigger man on the inside. Duran went to more of a spoiling fight on the outside. Just when Hagler had duran stretched and struggling he backed off.

Boxrec rangers have no time for actually watching fights.

F*cking ZZ Top being a "great band." :rofl

Besides the bolded/underlined, I can't really disagree with much here.

I love how we micro-analyze fighters this way....I'm as guilty of it as anyone, don't get me wrong, but after a certain point it becomes meaningless, and not many middleweights would bear the kind of scrutiny we're putting Hagler under here. Robinson lost to a host of middleweights too, Hopkins' opposition was sub-par, everyone Monzon fought was tiny and old, blah blah blah......

All things considered, Hagler was the best middleweight of the world for a lot of years running; it could well be argued he fought and beat his best opponents on the way to the title, but he still beat a lot of very good fighters, both as a contender and middleweight champion. He ducked no one, and took an inordinate amount of pride in being the middleweight titlist. If that's not enough, then you're simply looking for too much.
