Good post - I've had an office job for years, I have no illusions of being a fighter - I'm just a fan of the sport, who adopted the training regimen for general health, well being, and of course a little summertime vanity.

Hang on - I've got a man here who knows me better than I do :nut

I'm telling you now; I've got small hands, long, thin bones and my knee and wrist joints are skinnier than most other peoples'. Honestly, I would hardly lie about this ****. It doesn't actually bother me because like I said, I tend to be quite strong for my size and I'm naturally athletic - but please, don't tell me what I do or don't eat. I'm on about 100g of protein (no supplements) a day at the moment over about six meals which is more than enough for someone of my weight to provide steady growth.

I think both of you could do with learning about body types and metabolism to back up your muscle building knowledge.

You're skinny because you don't eat enough to gain weight. What don't you understand? You're saying you're this weight because you're an ectomorph, so what will happen if you eat an extra 1000 calories a day on what you eat now? Will you gain weight or will the ectomorph people come and steal back the calories in the night? Stop talking BS.

It's the same as people saying I'm mainly fast twitch fibres, I'm slow twitch fibres, I gain weight easily, I gain weight with difficulty. Body type this, I'm mesomorph, ectomorph, endomorph. What does it matter? You might burn a few extra hundred calories, but if you want something enough your body will adapt to it.

Everyone has tendencies, but everyone can gain or lose weight. Everyone can get more muscular, or lose some flab. Your bones may be smaller and you will never be a 6 ft 250lb lean mean machine, but you can easily get to 200lbs with a couple of years of trying. You would have to make eating a priority, and train with reasonable consistency, but it's not that hard. 99% of guys who say they can't gain weight don't try and want to preserve their skinny-fat six pack. Not saying this is you being skinny fat since you say you've always trained, which is fair enough.
I am just saying if you wanted to gain some weight you would, but you are happy as you are, so you aren't, but don't lump it into some body type restriction. Do you even eat 2000 calories from whole foods every day consistently? Your body is probably just used to what you are eating and what you are putting yourself through and carries on as is. You can stay the same weight through starvation, or eating more. I don't remember the name of the hormone, could be the lipid hormone? I am not sure. Regardless you can be starving yourself consistently and your body just being happy trundling along eating away at itself for your body's needs, just to be temporarily rebuilt and start doing that again.

And 100g of protein will be just about enough for you to maintain what muscle you have at 140lbs. If you eat 100g of protein from very lean sources, and have about 1500-2000 calories a day that won't work, protein won't suddenly make you bigger by itself.

    What don't you understand?

I'm saying I'm an ectomorph, on the skinnier end. It's hard for me to gain weight, however, with constant exercise I maintain a good shape.

Did I, at any point, say it's impossible for me to put on weight? All I've said is that I am 'naturally' skinny, in that, my body is more inclined to be skinny than a mesomorph's.

This isn't mathematics, it's actually you totally misunderstanding what I'm saying. Seriously, you're picking up on **** I haven't even said.

Now I think you should stop telling people they need to put on weight and remember what the original point of my argument was; it is often advantageous to stay slimmer and fight at a lighter weight class in boxing.

Now stop avoiding the ****ing question and tell me why planches and one armed pull ups won't build strength and power.

Now you're doing it as well. Acting like I've come in here saying 'help, I can't gain weight because I'm an ectomorph' - no, I mentioned that I was one and that it's harder for me to be a musclehead than most.

I'm actually quite happy to be slim and strong for my size, while being more gracile than most without having to be on a bulking programme to maintain myself.

Agreed on the first point and if you got the impression of being under siege from me (not virus) then I was just making conversation on a topic that interests me. I was just talking in general about the ectomorph, natural weight etc statements! No offence mate.

The second point, however - They will build SOME strength up until a point, but anything bodyweight related is just that, they will build strength relative to the person's size. It's like saying a 120lbs boy doing a one armed pullup is stronger than someone who can do 1 pullup with +50lbs at a bodyweight of 250lbs. They are just things that need some practise, will build some basic strength but they won't be the strongest guys around. Again, better than doing nothing though, but these sort of things shouldn't be overcooked into being the be all and end all. The scope for strength improvement is limited.

And I've never been on a bulking program, have gained about 18kg in the last 2 years, I am not a disgusting fat body, and I would never need to be on a bulking program to maintain myself.

What do you eat on an average day? I'm wondering what eating a lot means to you.

See this is where I have a theory that people can get too caught up with 'eat lots, lift heavy, increase weight.'

    Look at gymnasts.

Go back a few pages and read. The question was about power, not strength.

At this point I'd like to add I have NEVER intentionally gained weight, or tried to, taken a protein shake or anything of that sort. I eat when I'm hungry, that's it. I usually eat more after training. I am also very much AGAINST the idea that people have to get bigger to get stronger. It SHOULD happen naturally up until a point, but past that you shouldn't think that you have no more scope for development without adding kg to the scale.

Gymnasts are fantastically strong individuals, what about them?

Hang on, why are you avoiding the question again?

Why won't planche push ups and one armed pull ups build strength and power?

I'll answer yours anyway; two bowls of porridge, some pork ribs, fish & mashed potato dinner with vegetables, a sandwich, a sausage roll, a couple bars of chocolate, bag of crisps and two glasses of milk in a normal day. That is along the upper end of how much I feel comfortable eating; I'm very sorry if this isn't enough

    Answer my question please.

You realise that many, if not most, don't lift weights other than themselves?

Not a lot of anything in crisps, you aren't trying hard enough here :D
    And it's only 5pm!
I answered your question if its any consolation.
