How many on here have a Boxing News subscription?

no love for The Ring??

 

Its expensive, plus I don't see it stocked that much in retailers.

 

Its always 3 months out of date. I used to buy all the boxing magazines but its pointless. There all out od date by the time they go to print.

 

WHSmith is the only place I know of.£5 is steep too

Agreed.Not sure why Margarito/Mosley was in Aprils edition and the whole hand wrap thing

 

Boxing Illustrated was great in the 1960s- it had loads of UK input and was basically an Anglo-American monthly. It dipped in the mid 70s until around 84 when the likes of Herbert Goldman and Mike Marley were writing for it. It maintained its quality with Bert Sugar as editor 'again' in the late 80s/early 90s. A great magazine. Much better ratings than The Ring too.

 

Don't get it no more unless its a slow day at work and the nearest shop has it. News of fight always has the news right away so i go by there a lot any get british sites you know of? i lack them

Get the Ring and Boxing Monthly every month, essential for the train journey. Tend to get Boxing News in the weeks when the other two aren't out. Tried to get a copy in Smiths in Felixstowe today but they didn't appear to stock it! Nine ****ing mags about running but no boxing

 

Boxing Monthly for me even if it means a trip to WH Smith.

 

have a subscription at the mo,not renewing it because i prefer to buy it from my local shop,builds a bit more excitement for some reason.
it's a great magazine though and i wouldn't miss it,claude abrams is a great boxing writer/predictor.

if you travel to northampton again,then the w.h smith in town is always a winner for a spare copy.or give me a shout and i'll hold one for you.

 

Ha Ha just come back from there about 20 mins ago. No magazine again and none here in MK. Gonna have to get the Mrs to our local Tesco is Manchester sharpish hopefully they'll have some left !

I always use to base my idea of world rankings on whatever Boxing Illustrated had.

Their format of ratings was clear.

They showed the top ten and their records and titles in each division.

And then beneath the top ten - they showed the names of the top 10 to 30 fighters in each division.

And also showed the top ten pound for pound fighters.

Way way way better magazine than the ring.

I spent about a decade buying the ring.

But it has never compared to Boxing Illustrated.

Ring was too cartoonish with pages and pages on pointless stuff like

what would happen if

Sugar Ray Robinson fought Felix Trinidad , etc

Ok to debate fantasy on the interent

But the ring was filled with pages of this fantasy crap and you were asked to shell out up to £5 a time

 

Which mag would waste the last 3rd of the issue with all the obscure world wide results that nobody gave a **** about?
Was It B.I. or Ring?

 

I've been a subscriber to Boxing News for a couple of years, and previous to that my local newsagent used to get in especially for me. Haven't missed an issue in over 14 years.
Been getting Boxing Monthly too since I was 13 (1993) and have never missed an issue of that since.

I really enjoy Boxing News as it covers the sport right from it's grass roots level and you can pick up results/reports from a lot of small hall shows that don't get much coverage other than their local papers.
They also have a great cross section of writers/correspondents, all differing in their styles. They have some brilliant young talented writers who write some fantastic articles in guys such as Danny Flexen and Tris Dixon.
(Oh, and they gave me a 4-page spread when I wrote an article for them on Bernard Hopkins back last year as their "Big Feature" :good )

I haven't bought an American magazine since around 1995 or '96. I find them to pretty out-dated by the time we get them, and I don't know if it's changed now but back then they only seemed to cover big names and well known prospects and never much about the peripheral guys in the sport.
Also, if it wasn't in the USA then it was if it hardly existed, and there was a heavy American bias in those magazines.
There are som great American writers that I enjoy reading though. Steve Farhood is hilarious, Ron Borges is great and Thomas Hauser is fantastic with his in-depth exposés of boxing-behind-the-scenes.
