If he went into the tank against Maxim I dont think he would have waited as long as he did in the scorching heat. The Maxim fight was legit. I think SRR may have carried a few guys but wouldnt dive. SRR had too much pride

If he was acting when the Maxim fight ended then he should have received an Academy Award for his performance. Wasn't it 125F under the ring lights that night, and didn't the referee faint? That s like saying Jack Johnson waited 26 rounds to throw the Willard bout.

Burley never stated that Robinson tanked the Maxim fight. The suggestion of such (in the Burley book) was made by Ike Williams - who was quoting boxing writer Bill Korum.

According to Ike, it was written by Korum (in the New York Journal American) that Robinson threw the fight against Maxim. Korum was also quoted by Ike as saying 'maybe his friends will tell him to sue me, but I know he won't'.

Maybe Korum had something against Robinson and wanted to belittle him - if he did, then the accusation is still pretty risky.

Also, Burley did not want to fly to LA to punch Robinson in the face - he was going to be in LA and told a friend that's what he felt like doing because of all the rotten deals Robinson had made.

I suggest you re-read the book or the relevant sections.

    Corrections noted.

It was indeed Williams who insisted the Ray threw the Maxim fight and he got the idea from Corum. And Corum said that Ray wouldn't dare sue him because he knew he was right. From everything I've ever seen or read, this seems very far fetched. But you are correct, it was Ike saying this, not Burley.

The point of the second anecdote - and it was stated that Burley "took the opportunity to meet Ray" and "wanted to beat his ass on the spot" on one of several trips to California- was that Burley did think that Ray was "up to his neck with the racketeers." And this was from a quote of long time friend Bobby Lippi. So, whether or not he made a contention regarding the Maxim fight, it is clearly suggested by Otty's book that Robinson, and Moore, played the game, or at the very least, that was the perception of some people.

I think he agreed to carry guys at times. He admitted as much. He didn't lose but 1 fight in 11 years. It's not filmed but losing to a Super Middle who was good isn't that suspicious. He carried Fusari. I doubt Ray faked a Heat Stroke. His son later said his dad wasn't himself for 6 months after Maxim.
