Marciano did have the power to hurt big powerful men.

Checkout 0:40 that's a 270lb heavy bag Marciano's hammering and moving around.

 

Fireworks early, but like said before, the longer the fight, the more edge goes to Marciano.

 

A very dangerous fight for Jack .. if he fights him like he fought Firpo Dempsey could get flattened .. Like Rocky , Jack had the punch to cripple Lyle as well .. exciting match up ..

 

Marciano's crouching style nullified height advantages. That said, Lyle was a very good, very tough fighter, who had the misfortune of fighting in the greatest era of HW boxing in history. He'd be much higher ranked had he come around in the 50s or 80s, for example. In Marciano's day, HWs were CWs by today's standards. Lyle would have been a whole other (then nonexistent) weight class. If Marciano connected flush, anything could happen, but you'd gotta think a 6'3", legitimate modern HW would be too much for a 185lb Marciano.

In response - you say Lyle was as proven if not more and you use his fights versus ali,foreman,bonavena,ellis, and quarry, joe bugner, earnie shavers and buster mathis as evidence?? :huh But Lyle lost to Ali and Foreman and Quarry and he couldn't stop the fragile lightheavyweight Jimmy Ellis which doesn't bode well for his chances of stopping the iron jawed Rock - fair enough he beat Mr Blobby in Buster Mathis which isn't really anything to write home about but he was also beaten twice by Jimmy Young and held to a draw by Gregorio Peralta!!!atsch....

No I don't think Lyle is ever beating Rocky Maraciano - in fact if he ever dreamed he'd beat him he bedder wake up and apologise

 

This is one hell of a fight, and Lyle would have a chance at winning. Most likely, though, Marciano prevails in a war.

I was tempted to pick Lyle over Marciano, but realized that Lyle had trouble with numerous so-so heavyweights. I'm talking about Lyle's tune-ups, the bouts that most of today's fans aren't aware of.

One example is Lyle's decision victory over 5'10" Bob Stallings, an unrated guy who had lost half of his fights. If Stallings figured out how to use shortness to throw Lyle off, Marciano could have done the same.

Fights like the Stallings match make me think that even Lyle was big, powerful, and dangerous, and even though he might have upset Marciano, the Rock would probably win in the end.

 

Rocky in a tough fight. Not hell, but a tough fight.
