I honestly do not feel that Greb was making anything up. But what I do have a problem with is grouping every NY writer in and saying they were on the take, specifically Edgren. He may not have liked Greb's style, but in that article by Mike Casey (been a long time since I've read it) he includes Greb as one of the best among Ketchel, Walker, Papke and Ryan. If he were totally dismissive of Greb, he would not haved qouted him as being among the best. But he is unwavering in his belief that Fitz was too dangerous a proposition for any middleweight he'd seen. Perhaps that is where the problem lies with you and klompton????? Regardless, I do not feel that unless something is found conclusively implicating Edgren, that you are not right in including him within that group of NY writers. Perhaps the ill blood resulted from Edgren accusing Bat Masterson of poor ring knowledge and journalism, and accusing Wyatt Earp of taking a bribe to declare Sharkey a winner over Fitzsimmons on a foul. In later years, Masterson was able to get William Muldoon (Greb's friend) as Chairman of NY boxing commission. So dunno...maybe some history there. But in saying that Edgren took bribes, you, slakka, are accusing a sportswriter who was known first and foremost for his integrity and respected for his opinions by many a boxing historian...so yeah, I'll take exception to that. The "proof" you supplied, would get you laughed out of any courtroom very promptly as a total joke.
I think you're a smart ass ...... and possibly dyslexic. Have you read it ........ especially the first one in the list?
Keep in mind you called him the premier sports writer of his generation. Thats a joke! U explain why hes touting Walker and deemphasizing Greb in the same article. Only a hack would do that.
Dont get me started on Masterson. He makes Michael Katz look cuddly. I dont know how he kept his job as long as he did (Until he died!!) He seems to have hated almost every fighter he ever saw and wasnt afraid to write about it. He and Jim Jab who never saw a fight he didnt think was fixed would have had a wonderful time arguing over who the worst fighter around was. Bat getting his friend Muldoon appointed Commissioner, by his other close friend the Governor was a bit of the good ole boy system in New York at work. Im still amazed that the Tammany machine didnt oust Muldoon when they took power as Muldoon was becoming erratic at that point (and arguably senile). If I had to make a guess it would be that it was easier to keep him in power as a very visible figurehead to hide their machinations behind than to get rid of him, which is what the press expected them to do at the time. That part of boxing in New York has never really been told to any great extent and would make a wonderful book for those interested in politics and its effects on boxing.
Wow...every yoyo with a keyboard is an expert award winning journalist nowadays. If that's the best you can slam me with, take another try at it... Keep in mind that you are the one accusing an esteemed writer, (by noted boxing historians no less) of taking bribes without proper grounds to do so...That's a bigger joke. BTW- How many of those old time fighters have you seen first hand? How many articles about the old timers are filled with your qoutes? How many no decision fights were based on your opinion because the fight crowd trusted and accepted your stance as unbaised? slakka, it doesn't add up...and you're not on solid ground with that half- assed statement. Everybody in the civilized and uncivilized world has been thrashed by the NY press at one time or another for that matter. Aren't you just pissed he picked Fitz as the ATG middle? Hehe...Go ahead say it...He might have stopped your boy, you know...
I would imagine we might find out more than we would ever want to know about said politics...But it would be interesting. Addendum: Masterson sounds almost unbelievable. Some of that stuff.
The ny boxing writers fired back at Harry Greb BIG TIME when he blew the whistle on them. If you wanna stick your head in the sand about it go right ahead
I'm talking about only Edgren specifically. Addendum: Please feel free to answer any of those questions in my post. It doesn't add up...maybe ther were bitter feelings, but bribes to Edgren? Nothing is supporting your case.
Masterson was a pretty irritating character. You cant help but read his articles and feel the contempt he held for fighters dripping from his pen. It probably got worse as he got older. That seems to happen. Jim Jab was just as bad. I swear every article you read on him (and Ive read hundreds) he is insinuating that whatever fight he was reporting on was fixed. Both guys were from the Sullivan era and one gets the impression that to them fighters of the 1910s and 1920s just didnt compare with their heros and by god they were going to make everyone well aware of that.
Is that all ya got? Look around Edgren's name is all over those first hand accounts and articles about old time fighters used by boxing historians... Why is that? How many of those old timers have you seen and studied firsthand? Gimme proof of Edgren's implication.
Masterson sounds like an allround con artist and hack...Geez we finally agree on something. A sure sign of the apocalypse I'm sure...
