Why so Scrap? I ask because I was doing a bit of training earlier and then suddenly realised if I keep my hands up at cheekbone level, my opponent could possibly throw a right under my guard, going right through and landing directly on my chin, is that why? Kinda like what happened to Jermain, although his guard seemed to be more at eyebrow level. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8-tlIVaNb8[/ame]
I think he might mean that if you arn't hitting, than you're the one who's waiting to get hit. And no guard is 100%
Sorry Gavin missed your post, its Pscyhcodinamics the reason for why we do. I interperate High gaurd with thumbs to ears which means in my Book over the front foot waiting to get Hit. Which means Biomechanicaly you cant punch correctly, lessen vision and expecting to get Hit. Otherwise you wouldnt do it, it means thats your only source to defend or counter without good vision. By moving feet knees and shoulders, the hips and head can move otherwise with the hips having 6 degrees of movement you are a stationary target. Tysons style was different His hands were level with His shoulders his vision was good, movement great when young. An older Tyson without movement started putting His hands up and losing Oral stability by sticking His arse out. Everything was lost.
You should not only relying on a high guard, at least not in my opinion. You should practice all defensive manouvers. Bob and weave, slip and slide. Use drills for it as much as possible. Then take it in to light sparring, and then in sparring, in the end it comes naturally and you will be able to do it in a fight as well. The Predator
I was big on high guard, I love how Mike Brodie, Jamie Moore, Mike Gomez and Trinidad box for instance- but someone I know pointed out how often these people with a high guard get hit. My boxers all box with a high guard but that will be addition to good balance and vision.
Interestingly, the problem lies in the eyes 1/6 of a second memory. what we are looking at when Boxing is the last movement. analyzing it is the problem ,and where you are when analyzing it . I find shadowboxing with a partner is a good idea getting use to opposing movement, is good helps.. All the great Fighters Ive seen, never Sparred Heavy unless they had to.
An other idea, try Shadowboxing with the eyes shut. Gives better speed througth feel, the bodys fastert response, and stops the eyes peritharals slowing you down. Feel dont use eye images, use whats in the Head to respond to position.
Offense and defense should never be independent. Sometimes its just safe to throw while incorporating defense into it. Punch, weave, punch, lean, punch slip, punch, step. Its dumb to actually throw a combo and just stand there. Malpractice.
