I neglected to thank you for posting this B, I do so now. I note that when the then 34 years old Jeffries signed to fight Johnson,he said he scaled 285lbs, this would make him 60lbs over his fighting weight ,not 100lbs. Perhaps we can now lay to rest the 100lbs figure that is so freely bandied about?
This is something you've never been guilty of When you are corrected ,or called out, you ignore it. Understandable really, if you admitted and, corrected your mistakes, you would have no time left to post anything!:rofl Want some more ? Rainman?
And my point was that the young photo of Jeffries I posted was a lot more indicative of his prime physique than what he looked like in 1908, 1909, or 1910. But, if you choose to believe that he was anywhere near his prime physique in those later years then so be it, have fun living in fantasy land.
The Hong Kong I will. We all know that Johnson defeated Big Jeff because Jeff could not take the smell of Negroes. It was an unfair advantage.
Why? Even you yourself said he had been working to lose weight when he signed. We also have photos that show him grossly overweight. I have no problem believing he came down 100 lbs. You are the one who keeps trying to minimize the absolute hole Jeffries had to climb out of in order to become something even approaching a viable contender.
The fact that Jeffries hadn't fought in 5 or 6 years, had to lose anywhere between 50-100 pounds of blubber, had no tuneup fights prior to taking on an ATG in Jack Johnson who was prime or almost prime and had been active during Jeffries retirement indicates to me that he was pretty washed up. That's not Joihnsons fault however. Jeffries should've known better but caved in to pressure and the the lure of money to take Jack on. It's a shame that the two didn't fight when Jim was champ. That again isn't Johnson's fault as we all know. Might've been an all time classic.
That's basically how I see it. We know he was past his best, but the question is, to what extent was the deterioration? The question is further complicated by the fact that there's such scant footage of him during his prime to compare his form with.
I think the photo of a 20 years old Jeffries you provided, showed a very impressive physique, just were this is supposed to fit into your argument,I am sure you will be only to delighted to enlighten us. You are arguing against yourself here, principally because you are too lazy to read my posts.
Jeffries ,by the words out of his own mouth, said he was 285lbs when he signed to fight Johnson. That was in March 1909 this gave him 16 months to shed 60lbs. I am the first to say that doing so had a disastrous effect on his body . Where do you wish this thread to go?
Jeffries was in good condition for the Johnson fight. This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This doesn't mean he had much fight left in him.
According to this at 0:45 Jeffries was at 314lbs six months before the fight. [yt]L1y76L2P-IQ[/yt] Is that right or wrong?
He was done. Very little sparring in camp, mentally a mess. I think it speaks highly of Johnson's temperament and mental strength that he was able to remain so cool himself, though actually the atmosphere seems to have been less charged than is generally thought. Burns was a more charged atmosphere, I think.
