How Would Andre Ward's Opponents In Their Prime Fare Against Sergey Kovalev At 175?

I don't think that's likely. But I didn't think it was likely for Ward to dismantle Barrera so easily, either. I still think the key for Ward in everything is footwork to neutralize his opponent's best weapon. In the case of Barrera, I believed that to be the jab. Ward did neutralize it early, made Barrera reluctant to throw it, and then Barrera almost abandoned it completely making Ward's job much easier.

In the case of Kovalev, I think Ward will be looking to shut down Kovalev's right hand. He won't shut it down, but he could find ways to effectively neutralize it. I see it becoming a battle of left hands, and that's not a battle I'm quick to write Kovalev off from winning.

But i think Ward can stop Kovalev from, in your words, "jab to the body and right cross over and over again".

I'm not convinced he will find the mark with the right nearly as frequently as your suggesting. But the flipside to that is, it doesn't take many from Kovalev, and may only take one.

And I concede to being a tad surprised that you aren't giving Ward a bit more credit today, because my opinion of Barrera still remains higher than most after yesterday. I think he's a talented fighter who's a tough fight for most guys at 175. He's not in the inner most circle of talent, but he's probably just one circle removed, if you get my meaning.

Hey I scored it a shutout for Ward, I think I'm the only one on the RBR that did that, obviously I was impressed...... but annoyed at the same time since Barrera I thought could have tried a little harder, and had he, Ward probably wouldn't have looked as good, but coulda, woulda, shoulda. So I'm being grouchy about it, as expected.:yep

And yeah maybe the right cross comment is a little bit of an overstatement, but he hit BHop and Pascal with it over and over as well, maybe not clean every time, but enough to get the job done. That combined with Kovalev's far more impressive array of punches, and especially his footwork and feints, Ward will have his hands full. And like you said it may only take one.

Do you think Barreras never going 12 rounds before made him hesitant to throw a lot of punches and possibly get tired and KTFO? Both guys looked very tired in the last 3-4 rounds.

I still favor Kovalev, don't get me wrong. But I don't think it's likely that things will be easy for him.

Ultimately I like Ward's chances much, much better than you appear to see things. I also thought Barrera would be a better challenge, but I did mention the possibility that things could be easy for Ward if he neutralized the jab early, which I think he clearly did.

Has Kovalev ever fought a tough inside fight?:huh At the moment that would be one way for Ward to approach him. Punch and smother. Work what you can on the inside. If that doesn't work try the outside with your jab. If that doesn't work then tell Virgil to throw in the towel before Ward gets put in a pine box!:verysad

have mercy on pascal.I think he's finished at this point after the two beatings he took from kovalev.he also should have lost against gonzalez but got a gift. I think barrera would ko pascal easily.

Neither do I in reality, I'm expecting a chess match that will edge increasingly closer to a beatdown after the match hits the midway, with Kovalev sealing the deal in the 9th or 10th round.

Barrera clearly didn't perform up to the level that either of us had envisioned, part of that was due to his jab being neutralized the other part was him being totally ill prepared mentally for a match of that caliber at that point in his career. The closer the fight came the more that reality started to sink in on me, but instead of abandoning ship, I doubled down and kept my fingers crossed in spite of the fact that there was a 95% chance it was going to slam headfirst into an iceberg.
