Very true, there is nothing he can do, fans have made their minds up, Calzaghe knows this, there are no worthy opponents out there that will get him praise worthwhile of a comeback so he made the right choice.

You might question some of Calzaghe`s early career moves but whats not in doubt is that he was an elite fighter & a handfull for anyone at his weight - only a true dumbass will not see this.
The best p4p British fighter post war.

I salute the man's career, however....
I wouldn't view him any less had he gone to the states and fought a few names win or lose. I do view him in a lesser light because he didn't.

Hopkins and Jones should have been forced years back.

    The names of:
    Manfredo
    Bika
    Ashira
    Salem
    Mkrtchyan
    Pudwill

    Should have been:

    Wright
    Johnson
    Tarver
    Trinidad
    Pavlik
    Taylor

I know some of these fights probably couldn't have been made....

But I'll bet had he gone stateside sooner some of them could have been.

I can't think of any obvious fights he could take right now that would change people's minds. Froch would be meaningless. Dawson would be pretty good, but would not undo the damage. Tarver would be meaningless. Johnson would be ok only - but still wouldn't meet the criteria of changing Joe's legacy.

It would take something else. Maybe like moving up to cruiser. If he did this and beat Adamek it would make people take notice (although Adamek was already beaten by Dawson so Joe would likely need to beat Dawson as well)

This is the only - within imagination - fight I could see that would have any impact on his legacy.

If Joe was to come back, beat Johson, Dawson then Adamek, then it would change a lot of minds.

In the far realms of strange, if Haye was to beat Wlad and Vitali - then drop back to cruiser and thrash Adamek - then Joe was to meet and beat Haye - then it would the best single fight for the purposes of his legacy.

Listen....Calzaghe is a brillian fighter without doubt one of the best we have sen from the UK.

but I dont think he is as good as Roy and Bernard. I dont think anyone with solid Judgement would rate Joe as highly as those 2.

I dont think people relaise how hard it is to fight at TOP level for a decade and consistantly fight TOP opposition.

Joe has rarely done that...a win over B-Hop his only win.

i also think Joe was in his prime when he face dBHop,,,,,Calzaghe struggled wih robin Reid David Starie Charles Brewer in his so called prime years.

There's nothing he can do now, i think what most 'haters' are getting at is that he should have proven himself years ago. At the end of the day he should have sought the big fights years before he did and the Roy Jones fight in particular will always be a black mark against Calzaghes name due to the fact that even Joe himself had declared Roy shot to pieces two years previous to the fight.

I like Calzaghe, but due to his 9 years of defending a WBO against mostly worthless opposition i can fully see where the 'haters' are coming from. As a modern day great i'd have him in with guys like Winky Wright and James Toney - very very good but falling short of guys like Pac, JMM, MAB, Morales, PBF, Mosley, Hopkins, Lennox

  6. The names of:
    Manfredo - insisted by HBO
Bika - decent fighter, top 10, handful for anyone at the weight
Ashira - not a great choice, but Joe dominated with a broken hand.
Salem - decent fighter - not the best, but not utter fodder.
Mkrtchyan - first defence I believe... Better than the likes of Gary Lockett in any case.
    Pudwill - late replacement

    Should have been:

    Wright - LMW...
Johnson - only thing he ever did was ko jones - his record at SMW is absolutely shocking
Tarver - Joe beat the guy that destroyed Tarver. Tarver would be worth nothing on Joes resume
Trinidad - Serious? Career welterweight, and crap above 154...
Pavlik - Lacy mark II... Joe beat Hopkins, Hopkins destroyed Pavlik
Taylor - Never in the same division.. Was going to happen however - but Taylor either turned it down, or lost to Pavlik.

This a a great argument....if boxers were only allowed to fight in one division, at one weight, for their entire career....

  8. I'm sorry - what is the issue?

    Which fight/fighter?

Sorry Joe, I think you're the only guy on ESB who thinks those names look better than the ones I put forward. I would debate, but I have a feeling debating someone called 'Iron Fist Joe' Would be a frivolous.

There is nothing that Joe can do now since he hung up the gloves. Look at what Pac has done and still he doesn't get the respect that he earned by doing what Joe should have done while in his prime! Joe did not look for the challenges to in his prime to really cement his legacy. Joe was very comfortable fighting guys in his hometown who weren't close to his level. He had a very good career for a GREAT fighter. Pac on the other hand has a GREAT career for a GREAT fighter which is where the difference shows. Love joe and all but dissapointed that we never had the chance to see his true greatness.

He could make a comeback, beat all top5 SMW and LHW and beat Hopkins again! But the reaction and the excuses would be the same as now! Pointless and waste of time, his true fans knows he have nothing to prove!

Joe should just stay retired, and he should be allowed enjoy his retirement in peace!

He threw away the chance to do it along time ago.

  14. You obviously don't detect the irony in the name.

I never said the list of names he fought were better - however, I merely offered (what I consider to be) valid counter arguments. Please - feel free to debate, to decline to debate with someone based on assumptions due to their alias alone...

Anyway - some of those names are valid - however, few are valid during the majority of the period you're suggesting.

Tomasz Adamek would be a winnable fight. 50/50 in IMHO and would add something to his Legacy.
