difficult fight for ali. if he was caught flush, he might be one of them statistics.

This fight would have been decided on whether Ali oould have stayed disciplined througout. Showboating and arrogance against a fellow like Tyson is suicide. Even Ali's chin wouldn't survive that. Otherwise Ali would land a safe point victory.

Yes, they both would have troubled each other with handspeed IMO.
Ali will have to take full advantage of his reach & footwork to outpoint Mike in this one.

Probably not very well. Ali was a tough man and a great fighter, but I think this particular match-up does NOT favor him.

Amen, an excellent point. People think prime Tyson, they think his big knockouts and dismantling of Spinks. They forget his struggling against very ordinary fighters.

Ali survives a fight with rocky moments to win an easy UD. Skillwise, and mentally, he's in a different league to Mike, young or post-prison. If Mike couldn't knock you out with ease, he was going to atleast struggle. He did against lesser opposition. Against Ali, he'd be slowly beaten and then outpointed.

Tyson would be completely muckfuddled before they ever climbed in the ring. The pre-fight press tour would be absolutley classic.

Interesting point, but that was only Tyson's 20th fight and his first fight against a seasoned pro with world class experience. I think he learned a lot from this fight as many of his other previous ones were quick knockouts against no-hopers. I do see what you are saying, but for the reasons I have mentioned it's kind of hard for me to see this particular fight as a good gauge for the proposed match-up. Looking back at Ali's resume, he didn't face many fighters with exceptional hand speed and the only one I can think of atm (besides Floyd Patterson-who lasted into the 12 and was only 196 lbs lbs) is Doug Jones, who had a very different style than Tyson, but pretty good hand speed which gave Ali absolute fits. 2 Judges had the fight for Ali by only 1 round and many observers felt that Jones deserved it. I also think about the success Joe Frazier had in landing those hooks to Ali, and imo Tyson's were faster and sharper. Either way we will never know for sure, but imo a seasoned and prime Tyson would be real trouble for a seasoned and prime Ali.

Tyson had problems with tall rangy guys who could box on their toes: Douglas, Tillis, Green, etc. Plus, I don't think would've had the mental fortitude to beat Ali. Ali was the psychological master in the squared circle.

Tyson did have trouble with the guys you mentioned, but Tyson was clearly not mentally and physically as sharp as he should have been for the Douglas fight, and the other fighters you mentioned held on for dear on the inside. I'm not so sure he would have tied Tyson up as often as those guys did. I don't remember Ali tying Frazier up as much as he could have during some of their inside exchanges. It really is hard for me to say who takes this one, but I think both men would have trouble with each other.

Well, then I think it all comes down to who the smarter fighter in the ring was and that was clearly Ali.

And, I wholeheartedly disagree with what you said about Mike regarding his fight with Douglas. Douglas boxed Mike's ears off in that fight and that's the reason Mike lost. It was already shown in previous fights that Mike had problems with tall guys who could box on their toes and James did just that and was beating Mike to the punch all night long. Mike simply didn't have an answer 'til the uppercut landed. Mike's skills had not diminished at all at that time IMO but I do believe he was psychologically damaged from Cus' death and Jimmy Jacobs death. But, that's not to say that Mike wins that fight even if Cus or Jimmy is in his corner. I just think James had Mike's number that night.

correct all big punchers but but there punches did not have the speed of Tyson"s punches. that my friend is the X factor. you can be a harder puncher or punch just as hard but if the other man is faster it's a big difference. the punches that hurt you are the ones you don't see coming and speed has a lot to do with that
