he'd be good but would need to work at his concentration levels at the top level. I can see jack catching him unawares and stopping his title march if he wasn't 100%.
Very well. Bizarre this obsession with heavyweight A in heavyweight B's era. You literally almost never see it where other weights are concerned. "Emile Griffith in Jack Britton's era?" Doesn't happen.
...although actually it's a very intersting question in this instance. 1) Lewis was not a great self-promoter like Johnson. He didn't come over well on camera, and nor was he particularly charismatic. This means he has to make his way through boxing alone. 2) Part of Harry Wills' problem was that he was a bit boring. People were able to point at decisions where Dempsey delivered KO's. It was a sin that Wills was ignored but if he was bulldozing guys, his position would have been even stronger. 3) That makes things awkward for Lewis. He is naturally cautious and will be in with loads and loads of guys who are boxing to survive, often while being nurtured by officials who want to see him lose, pressmen who are politically or financially connected to a house fighter while he himself will be compromised early by poverty and possibly forced to wear the cuffs. 4) He's not stupid, so we're likely to see a change of styles. He'd become a bit of a bomber for the above reasons I reckon. That would work really, really well for him for the most part - i could see him knocking a LOT of guys out. This makes him harder to ignore as he gets nearer the title. But, as has been pointed out, he was twice stopped by punchers of only middling skill. Could he run into something horrible and become derailled? I rather think that's possible. Because of his race, a KO loss could see him shuffled to the back of the queue. 5) A Wills fight would be key for him. He needs to KO Wills and then bomb out some other guys right behind it without getting stopped. If he could do that, I think he'd be champion.
Interesting post. I think McCall and Rahman would have beat the shlt out of a lot of guys back in those days. They probably would have lost some too. McCall isn't getting stopped though. Rahman comes in at 6'2 1/2" with an 82" reach and weighed 236 - 253 1/2 Lbs. in HW World Title fights. He stopped beat Ross Puritty W10, Trevor Berbick W10, Jeff Wooden KO9, Obed Sullivan W12, Jesse Ferguson W12, Melvin Foster KO2, Corrie Sanders KO7, Frankie Swindell KO7, Lennox Lewis KO5, Al Cole W12, Rob Calloway KO2, Terrence Lewis KO2, Kali Meehan KO4, Monte Barrett W12, and ****y Ryan KO2 among others. He drew with David Tua D12 (I thought Rahman won) and James Toney D12. Rahman lost to Tua , LKOby10 while way ahead on points. Tua hit him after the bell (round 9) and hurt him badly. Rahman got no extra time to recover and was still hurt when he came out for round 10. Tua jumped on Rahman and the fight was stopped while Rahman was still on his feet. Maskaev stopped Rahman LKOby8 and LKOby12. Rahman was ahead in both fights at the time of stoppage (even more so in their first fight). In their first fight Maskaev landed a shot that hurt Rahman and knocked him out of the ring. Rahmans head was on the floor while his feet where on the announcer's table and could not get in the ring within 20 seconds. 3 unfortunate KO losses. He was stopped in the 4th round by Lewis in their rematch. He showed up lazy vs. Ruiz and lost by close decision. He fought well vs. a past prime but determined Holyfield. The fight was stopped due to a head butt that caused massive swelling above Rahman's eye... it looked like he was growing another head. Holyfeld won by TD after 8 rounds. McCall comes in at 6'2" with an 82" reach and weighed 231 - 237 Lbs. in HW World Title fights. McCall was only stopped once in his career and it was because he refused to throw punches vs. Lewis in their rematch. He stopped Lewis, KO2, in their first fight. McCall also beat Bruce Seldon KO9, Jesse Ferguson W10, Francesco Damiani KO8, Larry Holmes W12, Oleg Maskaev KO1, Henry Akinwande KO10, Darroll Wilson KO4, Yanqui Diaz KO7, Lance Whitaker W10, and Fres Oquendo W12. He lost SDs to Orlin Norris and Tony Tucker. He lost hard fought decisions to Buster Douglas, Frank Bruno, DaVarryl Williamson (close fight), and Juan Carlos Gomez (rematch). He lost a close decision to Juan Carlos Gomez (their first fight) but the fight was changed to a NC when Gomez failed a drug test.
Yeah. McCall and Rahman would have been ordinary contenders in any era, but possibly one-hit-wonder champs in other eras too. They were just standard plodding strong heavyweights, respectable contenders but nothing special.
