I knew more about boxing 9 years ago. I used to watch tapes of old ATG's, watched every PPV, every HBO/Showtime event, every Friday night fight, even the fights that came on the Latin channels... I would even record the ESPN classic channel when they had old fights on there, especially their documentaries of course. Now I am a shell of my former self and don't really care that much about boxing as I did. So now I don't know **** about boxing.
Dont know anyone my age or younger who knows more, althought i know alot that really no their stuff, on ESB and people involved in boxing. But i do know a few older than me that have been in the game as trainers,Managers, former fighters and they know alot of stuff i dont. I respect the knowledge of oldtimers as they got a better feel for the fighters they watched or followed when they were actually fighting.. But as far as training tips, training fighters,on stuff that goes inside the ring, behind the scenes stuff.. Then i would say my knowledge is mediocre compared to lots of others. There are some oldtimers on the classic that have a vast knowledge on the old fighters and i wont try and debate with them as they are always comng up with little tid bits and trivia stuff that i didnt know. Only time ill disagree on something is when i hear stuff like how John L Sullivan would have kod Tyson, or Fitzimons would have kod Jones lol! And even then usually i dont bother Im pretty knowledgeable about old time fighters, as far as stats, who they beat, there style etc etc.... But but i would rater talk about fighters that were around when i first became a fan(late 70s) to the current guys, and im pretty good on breaking them down, or remembering how their fights played out and what type of fighters they were.. Also have a good perspective on how good they really were or how great or not so great they were regarded at the time, as some 70s,80s,90s guiys are either overrated or underrated and forgotten.. I like to set people straight on these topics.
:deal This guy knows his stuff i almost always agree with him, and if i dont, well its never ridiculous stuff, just a difference of opinion.
He certainly does know his stuff. I can't remember the last time I even slightly disagreed with him, if ever. As for the TS...my answer will be among this thread I started a while ago when I was drunk... http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=257824 ...:good
I'm actually relatively new to boxing, which many probably would not like to admit just to keep their ego intact. Just because a person is new to boxing does not make him or her unable to think critically or make sound judgments regarding specific fighters, styles, statistics, or perspectives. Specifically, I know of all the noteworthy fighters in the present day and the major ones throughout history. I have not seen all of their fights, but have been watching some here and there to broaden my horizons on the history and legacy of the sport. My interest spans more along the lines of the actual art of boxing, which then spreads to the fighters; the different styles of pugilistic self-expression through the course of a century and a half I find fascinating. I can converse with others regarding specific movements, intricacies, and subtleties that a fighter makes. Just when it comes to old boxing trivia, it's more or less a stretch.
My favourite thing to do when watching a fight, is to see what each fighter is trying to do stylistically, I always find it fascinating when you've heard all the build up, and you have an idea how they will fight, but when they get in the ring its interesting to see if they fight the way you anticipated they were going to, or whether they use a different approach etc. Just recently I haven't been watching as many telecasts, although I tend never to miss FNF, HBO, Showtime cards, I dont usually miss Skysports cards, although I have lately. I went from watching old school fighters, on my DVD's, to watching as many telecasts as I can week by week, although I must say, I preferred watching the old timers.
Grew up watching boxing in the 80s when boxing was on regular (not cable) television. Great time to be a boxing fan as many ATGs fought in that decade. Still watched boxing in the 90s though not as frequent being busy with college and work, but still managed to watch what the decade had to offer. Early 2000s didn't watch much at all. Interest revived in 2003 with Pac's win over Barrera. From Leonard-Hearns I in 1981 to the present: 30 years of watching/reading about boxing.
my dad taught me all about the old school fighters when i was less than 10, showed me lots of classic fights i started watching religiously from 15 and up... to this day i watch fights most week nights... old replays, exciting fights that i missed and fights i could watch over and over again. I know most current guys, even lower grade guys from Australia and Europe etc. People know not to bring up boxing in front of me because i drone on about it. I would say my knowledge is good, above average anyway, due to the fact i know most of the popular and not so popular fighters from about 1970 onwards and have seen literally thousands of fights. I am not good at the science involved or breaking down fighters... i just like to watch and enjoy
the only sport i follow daily watch any live fight i can i like 126 and up lower and i dont really follow i like to watch fights and score them and try to break them down to make future predictions im no expert and im not a boxer but i have a real appreciation for it
