Frank Shamrock doesn't have as good a Wrestling base as Hughes. Hughes would have done what Renzo was doing to Shamrock also. Renzo isn't a freak like GSP and Dennis Hallman caught a green Hughes. Hughes may have been green in the 1st Hallman fight but he fought him agian a couple years later and was submitted agian and has been submitted a couple of times since in addition to many close calls. Of course Renzo is a freak athlete like GSP but may I tell you GSP sought out the help of Renzo to help him in his Jiu Jitsu a few years back and Renzo is actually the man who promoted GSP to Brownbelt. So now Renzo isnt a freak like GSP but obviously GSP understands what Renzo Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is all about. I really don't understand how people thought Hughes lost to Serra. Other than a headbunt that nearly knocked Hughes out and a throw towards the end of the fight, what did Serra really do? Hughes pretty dictated and controlled the pace the majority of that fight. Both guys we involved in the headbutt, Hughes had time to recover and was still getting hurt in the 1st round. Serra was closer to finishing the fight therefore he deserves that round. Round 2 you gotta go with Hughes. Round 3 Hughes got a early takedown put did a good lay and pray while Serra was attempting sweeps and submissions. They stand back up and Serra throws him and lands a couple decent shots on the ground. Hughes holding up Serras arm after the fight tells me he thinks he was beaten. Renzo's JJ is more top game, and he's not gonna put Hughes on his back. I repeat, Renzo isn't a freak like GSP, he's not gonna put Hughes on his back. It's not gonna happen. You dont win Abu Dhabi twice when your basically only a top game guy. Agian Renzo isnt a freak like GSP but why does he need to be GSP ? Serra put Hughes on his back with a throw so why cant a slightly larger Renzo whos always had good takedowns put Hughes on his back ? People that are saying Hughes is on the decline, have to notice something, the guys he's lost to as of late aren't chumps. They're top 3 fighters, plus the injury that's been bothering him for a few years hasn't helped either. Of course he isnt losing to chumps but he is on the decline. When I watch Matt Hughes fight now I see a guy who almost looks bored and hes just going through the motions. Matt isnt nearly as agressive, strong or confident as he used to be.
Yeah GSP trained downtown over at Renzo's for a little while. When I heard about that I wanted to train there because Renzo's is just a few train stops away from my house but I found it to expensive. I actually wanted to watch GSP train but never got around to it. But yeah, I agree, GSP understands what Renzo Gracie Jiu-jitsu is all about, however GSP's extra gifts were the extra advantage he had over Hughes. Things that Renzo doesn't possess. No Renzo doesn't have to be GSP, but it takes a fighter of (or close to) GSP's caliber to beat Hughes. Nevermind Hallman, he'd get crushed now. But guys like Penn(good Boxing, great JJ, great TDD, GSP(great Wrestling, Great standup, great TDD, & Alves(great TDD, great Muay Thai) see what I mean? Those guys are more well rounded than Renzo. They have much more arsenal and give Hughes more problems. Renzo to his credit is a GREAT jj fighter and world class. This won't be Chris Lytle off his back against Hughes that's for sure, Renzo is a GREAT ground guy and of course has a chance. But I don't see Hughes getting beat with just Jiu-jitsu right now and I honestly think a Gracie(just like that Serra fight) may really motivate him. I think Matt's timing was a little off in that fight(and that ****ing southpaw stance gets on my nerves, and yeah slightly on the decline but not as bad as Chuck) and his shot isn't as sharp as it used to be. But Hughes is a great fighter so who knows how he might look in his next fight. And I agree with Hughes not looking as aggressive as he used to be. As far as Hughes's strength & confidence, I think those are the 2 things that keep him going. Hughes is a competitive freak and I don't think he enjoyed losing those 2 fights in a row and it for surely fustrated the hell out of me watching it. I think a Gracie fight is perfect for him right now to be honest. I think he's gonna enjoy this
Chris Lytle aint no bum off his back hes a Blackbelt himself obviously not a Renzo level but a Blackbelt is a Blackbelt and if I remember correctly he did sweep Hughes once. How much is Renzo's NY school ? I train at his affilate in Baltimore and thats 125 a month which is pretty damn high if you ask me. I found his seminar at 80 bucks alittle high im learning a few moves from the guy for 3 hours not renting the guy for an entire weekend.
Hughes will fight a conservative fight, control the takedowns, get a few guard passes, and win a decision. Hughes has beaten better grapplers than Renzo, especially if you consider that they will be grappling in an mma fight, not a grappling match. Hughes put on a damn good show at ADCC himself, fighting way above his weight and only lost to Tito because the ref restarted them with Tito having a complete grip on a single, which he didn't have when they went out of bounds. Hughes is certainly much better at subs than Renzo is at wrestling.
No I didn't mean Lytle is a bum off his back, he's a really good grappler himself, I'm just saying his submission skills aren't gonna be as good as a Gracie. Lytle was looking for the Guillontine pretty much all night, but Hughes has a big neck, he's tough to choke out these days. That triangle BJ went for on Hughes gassed him trying to finish it when he was seemingly on cruise control. Just like Lytle, Hughes holds a black belt himself, (not a world champion black belt of course) but Hughes knows what he's doing on the ground too. That's why I think Renzo is gonna have a really tough time. To be honest, I don't remember how much Renzo's was. This was back in 2006 so my memory is a little foggy remembering that. I still have the paper somewhere though, when I find it I'll tell you. But what I do remember is that it was to damn expensive, I couldn't believe it. But now I'm about to start training under Vitor Shaolin. He was really nice to me when I met him a few weeks ago and his school is pretty good and I heard he put on a show at the MMA expo about a month and a half ago down here. I'm not suprised, his ground game is ****in wicked. I think he's the perfect guy to tighten up my Jiu-jitsu. Did I read that correctly? 80 dollars for a seminar?
I like the Gracie`s.... both Renzo & Hughes are past their best but I`ll be rooting for Renzo. I think he gave Sakuraba the best fight of all the Gracie`s when Sak was at his peak & regarded as the no1 in MMA, he was actually winning until Sak dislocated his elbow joint (that **** was scary looking :admin) Check it out....... Yup 80 bucks and this was recent id say April maybe so you know the economy was in the shits im suprised so many turned up. Travis Lutter came a month later asking for 80 bucks a person as well I passed :yep **** that im not rich. Damn Shaolin is a beast so he is actually running the school or is it his top students running it like how it is with my current school ? Either way thats awesome. My memory is wack I think it was you ive discussed BJJ with before so did you train before ?
I most definately understand man, I'm not rich either. That's one of the reasons I have a problem with the way alot of people run they're gym fees these days. (most) people wanna be fighters because they're not fortunate. They're not rich and are trying to fight they're way out of poverty etc, etc. Like back in the day, alot of people turned to Boxing because they had no money. How the hell do these gyms expect people to train under those prices? It's absolutely ridiculous. I heard where Frank Mir trains at Striking Unlimited charges about 125 dollars a month and that pays for everything. That's a steal. It makes me wanna move to Vegas for that. Shaolin and his top students run the school. When I got there Vitor was at his desk writing something then he started asking me questions about if I've ever done Jiu-jitsu. He was very nice and his gentleman attitude made me wanna be a student. My memory is wack to man We probably did discuss JJ before. We've spoken several times. And yeah I've trained before. However my technical JJ skills need to be tightened. I'm more of a straight up submission guy/GNPer, so straight JJ I need to improve in.
Yeah, I must have missed Renzo's prime. I can't understand how a guy that was top of the food chain pound for pound and one of the most dominate champions in MMA is going to lose to a guy whose best win is...Tartakov in '96? I just don't get it. Maybe I have a nice surprise coming since I'm no fan of Hughes, but I just don't see Hughes losing. He'll take Gracie down and keep him there and I don't see him getting subbed from the bottom. He can't compete with the young guns, but Renzo Gracie sure ain't young anything. Hope I'm wrong.
Rickson was great but I don't buy him being undefeated for as many fights as they claimed he had:bart
If the fight is at 185 i fancy Renzo, if the fight is at 170 i would take Matt Hughes to win via his usual game plan, aka lie on top of his opponent for 3 rounds.
Wow if I walked into a gym and just saw Vitor Riberio writing at his desk id be like whoooaa. I understand you on the technical side. Ive been doing BJJ for about exactly 18 months but for awhile I was kinda half assing it just doing NO-GI 3-4 times a week. So much of my game was poor like my posture, hip movement, guard passing etc. I picked up a GI in April and started seriously training GI full time in like July or August under a Blackbelt who started out under Rickson Gracie and wow the improvement makes me laugh at how bad I was still pretty recently. The last 2 months have been damn near dominant to me I can honestly say I went 6 weeks without being tapped until I rolled with a Purple Belt the other day. Im doing a tournament January 16th im so exicted to see how much I have improved.
