Your answer is a good one and well reasoned but it just feels that the vast majority here refuse to aknowledge these things.
Ottke doesn't get much "hate" because most people tend to agree on him. When he's brought up it's mainly criticism from everybody, so there less arguments. Joe is a subject which tends to polarize people. He gets overrated and underrated, and brought up a lot in arguments. Maybe after a bit more time it'll even out.
I dont blame calzaghe for staying at home and fighting as everyone likes home advantage its just a pity the SMW division was not loaded with more talent, ottke didnt want to fight and the only americans to hold titles were lacy and mitchell as far as i can remember, plus hopkins actually backed out of a fight by demanding twice the fee, how strange I think calzaghe was a bit of a homebird and not willing to give up home advantage for big fights but a lot of people who give out about him and support other fighters who do exactly the same thing!
I think much of the reason is that before he beat Lacy he was largely unknown. I can't speak for how things were overseas, but in the US, Calzaghe was a name that only popped up on lists once in a while.he was not taken eriously on the world stage yet. agreed. Dawson needs to step it up. There is no controversy over Ottke. We all agree(with the exception of a few, believe it or not, they buy into the Ottke "greatness".)
Simple. Hopkins is a ATG! He fought everyone in his prime, including Roy Jones. Calzaghe, well he is a carefully managed fighter whose manager, Frank Warren would not allow him to fight anyone past "B" level, and would not allow him to have a passport until he was certain that both Jones and Hopkins were through. Both Calzaghe and Kessler are pretend champions who ducked the best fights in their primes. Calzaghe would easily qualify for that special fighter Joe Louis would fight once per month. What was it that Louis called that? The __________ of the month.
Hopkins and Jone's ATG records are intact and irrefutable. The only questionable record and legacy is the one whose career has been carefully managed and fabricated, Joe "Slap Like A B" Calzaghe.
If they were American they would cut him more slack, Americans have the loudest voice in here as they are the majority.
Calzaghe didnt duck G Johnson, he pulled out injured more than once but lets remember he pulled out injured 3 times against Sheika who he destroyed, he pulled out against Lacy also, but do you think he was avoiding them? Calzaghe was at the Woods - Johnson 3 fight and Johnson with his many losses also lost that one so the fight was of no interest, also Calzaghe beat Sheika and Hopkins who hold wins over Johnson. Calzaghe 46-0 Ring LHW & SMW champ won WBO 21 defences, WBC, WBA & IBF titles. Beat Eubank Reid Woodhall Veit who holds a win over Braehmer (now WBO LHW champ) Starie Mkertchyan who went on to win the European title Brewer Mitchell Sheika Lacy undefeated IBF champ Manfredo in the Ring top 10 at time of fight Bika only a good win because America know him from the contender, but world class Kessler undefeated WBC/WBA champ and won and lost WBA since and WBC champ Hopkins Ring LHW champ Jones faded but still in The Ring top 10 Part of the problem with Calzaghe was that he wasnt in the public eye earlier in his career. ie The Super 6 has put fighters in the public eye and got them known so that all their fights appear as big fights and wins, but look more closely and you will see alot is perseptions If Ward beats Green it will seem like a good win yet Green hasnt beaten anyone of real note and lost to Miranda. Dirrell who lost to Froch, has one real win of note a DQ against a small blown up MW whos big win was against who? Froch has lost to Kessler who Calzaghe beat. So alot is advertising and getting people known. Hopkins gets credit for losing and beating alot of good but smaller fighters, but he was known to the American public. People want to discredit Calzaghe beating Hopkins but Hopkins was Ring LHW champ and had just beaten Wright and beat Pavlik after (2 smaller fighters again)
That's because this isn't primarily a German speaking site. If a bunch of guys were raving about Ottke (on every other thread) and comparing him to real greats then there would be a similar response. Probably this kind of foolishness IS a regular occurrence on some German boxing boards considering how things are around here. Absurd is absurd. But, considering the dominant demographic of ESB's posting population it is understandable that some "B" level guys get a ridiculous boost (generally) - when that is "A" level on the island (or among those on their "side of town"). People often overlook shoddy comp, opportunistic choices, favorable/advantageous conditions, predisposed refs, and mundane performances when it is one of their own - or one they perceive as such.
