I actually thought Benton the more skilled of the two, to be honest. He just never got the breaks he should've, and when he did they were typically under shady circumstances to say the least. He was one of the most technically sound, poised Middleweights I've ever seen. Excellent skills.
Do you not think stylistically Qawi is pretty hard to beat, he is one of the best pressure fighters I have seen, and I also admit to being a big fan. Wonder why he has gone completly under my rader
Sure, he'd be a very difficult task for most, but I'd wager that most of the top notch pure boxing/technical box-punchers could pin him down provided they were on their A game. Pastrano, Johnson, Conteh, Foster, Conn, Lewis, etc. Spinks laid the blueprint, despite the claims of Qawi's disinterest in the fight. I don't think he's ever getting near an on-form Spinks.
Some great footage of Benton's second round KO of the tall, lanky, skilled Middleweight puncher Johnny Smith. He really shows great form in this one. Still, you can see what an excellent technical boxer he is. [yt]T-S-ng23OXg[/yt]
I agree on that. I do think as you say the box-punchers can keep him off and pin him down. But Pastrano IMO aint a good example, I think he lacks the power to keep him off, I think his movement might ecade him but Qawi would always be there and IMO beat him. Thanks for the Benton links, will check them out when I got some time
It all comes down to Qawi's plodding feet vs Pastrano's Pep-like maneuverability for me. Then again, despite the lack of speed in his movements, Qawi was very good at cutting the ring off with simple shifts, so who knows? Pastrano himself was great at escaping bad positions like the ones Qawi was known for getting opponents into. Would be a close one, I'm sure. I'd lean towards Pastrano on points, though.
It is the ultimate cat and mouse for the Light Heavyweights. I see Qawi having the firepower to edge the decision, and his workrate.
Benton sure was a world class fighter, and was unlucky with how his career panned out. But i can;t say he was more skilled than Griffith personally, to be honest i don;t think there's any luck inherent in the outcome of his career, he had a great career simply because he was great all round. His resume was fantastic, but i really need to score his series with Rodriguez.
Since you skipped the other fight I will take: Danny Lopez in a clear decision over Laporte Qawi by decision Brian Mitchell vs John John Molina
Morales by a nice decision and would not even be surprised if he stopped hamed late, but I will stick with an 8-4/9-3 type decision. Wlad vs Vitali
