When I saw him lose to Harding after all the **** he talked, I wasnt too high on Tarver. Griffin was shot to pieces when he beat him and he struggled again with Johnson. Funny how Jones just blew guys away and Tarver struggled with a few of them. Thats why I always just felt it was a bad style match for Jones, but Jones at his best would have always beat him just not as one sided as the rest.
very good question that should be asked by more people about more fighters. regarding jones : one will always be able to criticize him , just like today about his handpicking of opponents during his prime. regarding tyson : he destroyed everyone whom would fight him , widely decisioned the rest minority , i do not see knocks. i guess it could have shut up many of his detractors had he fought holyfield and foreman in his prime , and i think in his prime he would have destroyed lewis and holyfield and i also tend more to think he would have destroyed foreman than to think foreman would have destroyed him. regarding your first question most of the posters here would have always found a reason to claim Joe Louis or Muhammad Ali is the greatest , despite knowing most of the knocks on louis especially , and also to believe ali's greatest win , the one over george foreman to remove doubt , was a legitimate win. for me , ali never beat foreman. and louis is ridiculously overrated here. ali had the time he was stripped , louis had the WW2 , tyson had the jail. and tyson was smaller than both in an era of bigger heavyweights than both. for me , tyson is already without a doubt above frazier . frazier was down twice against bonavena . does anyone think tyson would have been down against any fighter of bonavena's size , even the 1997 version of tyson ?
All great answers guys. I too don't believe that a fighter's losses much after their prime should affect their overall standing, but the reality is that having an image of Roy stretched out on the canvas does have an impact on the way that he is perceived. Maybe many years after he is retired, we will be able to place his career in the proper perspective.
They would both be rated much higher - It's the Rocky Marciano effect only have 7 world title fights against a total of 5 people, then retire at 33, a very young age for heavyweight. People tend to fantasize mythical unbeatability for a lot of coulda wudda shudda's in boxing!
