Haha - I don’t get the argument that his resume is better tbh...sure a lot of Calzaghe’s defences were against bums but he also made a hell of a lot of them over the years.

Froch has a loss to a worse version of Kessler than Calzaghe beat and a loss to Ward.

Am I the only one who wouldn’t mind seeing Froch - Groves III?

When Groves wins he can claim to be the better British SMW, like Froch forgets he beat a finished version of Kessler who wanted a payday.

 

Why? He's full of praise and pretty accurate with his assessment. What's the issue? Carl was a pressure fighter, not a boxer. He fought everyone in their primes and didn't take soft touches.

Calzaghe spent far too much of his career fighting in Cardiff against the likes of Peter Manfredo, slapping thin air until the ref stopped it.

 

Froch didn’t seem to be happy about much if anything these days.

 

Has Froch got a better win than Hopkins? I don't know. People may look at Hopkins age but he was still an elite fighter and extremely hard to beat when Calzaghe beat him. Also, Calzaghe was a two weight champion. Beat a better version of Kessler. Ruined Lacy which is a similar win to Bute. Retired undefeated.

I think Calzaghe's resume is slightly better, albeit obviously padded too.

 

Calazaghe’s resume is full of tat but even in the wilderness years he beat some good fighters...Reid, woodhall, old eubank, sheika, bika, Brewer, Mitchell...

Saunders gets praised so much for Lemiuex but Calzaghe’s win over Lacy was better at the time...

Prime Kessler, Hopkins who was still world class for several years after...

Froch beat a shopworn Taylor (was being outboxed), pascal, got a gift against Dirrell (who went on to do nothing), Abraham, ancient Johnson, Bute (about as good as the Lacy win in hindsight), a virtually retired Kessler (having already lost to him) and a green George Groves (though I’d argue he was better in some ways back then).

Lost to a shopworn Kessler and Ward.

Not sure how that is a better resume?

 

There is no comparison between Calzaghe - Lacy and Saunders - Lemieux.

Calzaghe a much better win in a more significant fight.

Froch went on the road and fought them all which is very impressive. However his wins over Kessler, Taylor, Johnson were when they were past their best.

Dirrell fight was close.

Bute was a fantastic win and so was his finish of Groves in the 2nd bout.

Solid career.

Calzaghe had better wins however Froch had more exciting career.

Calzaghe vs Ward would have been a lot more competitive.

 

Calz is supreme in the skill department that Carl, that's a given. I must admit some of the names on Joe's record are tougher than they look but still Froch's resume is better overall.

Calzaghe for me, 3 great wins on his ledger:

Hopkins - Went on to have a great career at light heavy after the Calzaghe fight, ruined Pavlik in his very next fight!

Kessler - unified champion, 4 or 5 defenses to his name, in his prime.

Lacy - champion in his prime, the next Mike Tyson - obviously turned out to be otherwise, but the manner of victory was probably the best we've ever seen from a British fighter in a unification fight. It spawned the verb 'to Lacy someone'.

And the rest of his reign is often cruelly judged. Lots of decent wins in Eubank (Over the hill but still solid), Woodhall (same), Mitchell (Lost his title by split decision to the infamous Sven Ottke the fight before).

Very solid CV.

Froch has 3 solid wins in Groves, Kessler (lesser version than Calzaghe) and Bute (Lacy-esque). On the balance I give the nod to Calzaghe.

Froch also spawned the verb 'to Cobra' someone, awesome career too.

 

He said nothing controversial there.

 

The performances against Eubank and Jones and result against Hopkins are otherlevelness I'm afraid.

These Bute and Dirrell guys were okay fighters, though I thought Dirrell deserved a draw. 5ft9 Taylor didn't look strong at the weight to go 12 with a big, strong, fit super like Froch (though boxed his ears off).

Look what Hopkins did to Pascal who the tough Carl went life and death with...

 

The Groves in the ring with Smith was one that knew the injury against Eubanks finished him at the top level. Similar to Andy Murray, he has left it all in the ring and knows his body can no longer deliver to the standard required at the top level.

Joe Calzaghe had skill levels way above Frock and certainly down as one of the UK greats.

Frock really should have a good look at himself and be grateful to Groves for generating huge interest in a fight that made him millions.

Froch has admitted that he couldn't outpoint Calzaghe which coupled with the Welshman's solid beard and amazing powers of recovery mean a win for the big nosed wonder seems an unlikely prospect.
