I had it even the first time and with the KD it goes to Kovalev but some rounds were paper thin and I could see Ward winning it. It was not a robbery. There were a couple of rounds that could of gone either way depending on how you judge a fight which can be a bit subjective. Especially if you score the fight while disregarding the body work of Ward which many people tend to do.
I'm cool, you're the kid who's mad... This lil kid is fuming... Let me try it again... 7 rounds to 5 Andre Ward... how does that make you feel? Want to punch a wall breh? Your eyes getting watery?
In a way, I guess it's both good and bad that some people take these losses personally. That shows the type of dedication that sports like football, basketball, baseball and other major sports pull out of their fans. When your favorite team losses, you might find yourself saying, "WE lost" as if you are a part of that team. I love the passion that such fans bring to whatever sport we're considering. The downside to that, of course, is that we're not always gracious losers. We saw that during the most recent election cycle. We take losses personally, as if we ourselves somehow lost a fight, a game, a match, an election, etc. With boxing, I've never taken a loss personally no matter how much I respect and admire a given fighter. As a good example, I didn't take it personally when Marquez lost his third fight with Pacquiao even though I was a Marquez fan and thought he won it. I didn't cry robbery. I didn't **** and moan about the result. I enjoyed the fact that it was a good, close, highly-entertaining fight. Perhaps we could do the same here, no matter whether our guy won or lost - the Ward vs. Kovalev fight was highly entertaining, hard-fought, and good for boxing overall. It just so happens that I did score the fight for Ward, but as it has been said before (many times), I could have easily seen it going to Kovalev as well. Max Kellerman put it perfectly when he said that for Ward to win, he had to get every close round. For Kovalev to win, he only had to get two or three of the close rounds. That was the case for me, as I tended to give most or all of the close rounds to Ward as I appreciated his boxing I.Q. and his ability to get in and land clean shots on the far more powerful Kovalev while keeping Kovalev from largely landing his own. Here's how I scored it live: Round 1 - 10/9 Kovalev Round 2 - 10/8 Kovalev Round 3 - 10/9 Ward Round 4 - 10/9 Kovalev Round 5 - 10/9 Ward Round 6 - 10/9 Kovalev Round 7 - 10/9 Ward Round 8 - 10/9 Ward Round 9 - 10/9 Ward Round 10 - 10/9 Kovalev Round 11 - 10/9 Ward Round 12 - 10/9 Ward Result - 114/113 Ward I have no problem with anyone saying it could have (or even should have) gone the other way as there were so many close rounds in this fight that could have gone to Kovalev. It also depends on what you value more out of a fight (power and aggression or I.Q. and defense). Either way, we use the word "robbery" too loosely here when our guys doesn't win the decision. Hopefully Ward honors the rematch clause and we get to see it again (perhaps in Sergey's back yard next time).
No disrespect but you already screwed up on the 3rd and 5th rounds. That said try re-watching the whole fight.
My score is exactly the same as Harold Lederman's score except I gave Kovalev the 8th round and he did not. I am guessing that my score (117-110) is probably exactly how Doug Fischer of Ring Magazine (also 117-110 for Kovalev) scored the bout. Here is Lederman's card with the highlighted difference in my own card: R01 ===> 10-9 SK R02 ===> 10-8 SK R03 ===> 10-9 SK R04 ===> 10-9 SK R05 ===> 10-9 AW R06 ===> 10-9 SK R07 ===> 10-9 AW This content is protected R09 ===> 10-9 SK R10 ===> 10-9 SK R11 ===> 10-9 AW R12 ===> 10-9 SK Lederman ====> 116-111 Kovalev Me, D. Fischer ==> 117-110 Kovalev ===================================================== The fight went almost exactly as I thought it would go: Kovalev hurts Ward early and Ward spends the rest of the fight staying away from Kovalev's power, probably by fighting inside and holding/wrestling. This is why I predicted a Kovalev points victory in the prediction thread. Everything went as I thought it would, except -- like Kathy Duva -- I think the crowd influenced the judges in Ward's favor. I didn't think about the "hometown decision" aspect in the fight, and I think that's why Ward got the official decision. Ward was tough and stayed with it, but I thought Kovalev won and won handily. I also was surprised at the size and strength difference between the two fighters. Kovalev was the bigger and stronger fighter, to a greater extent than I thought he would be.
I rooted for Ward, put my money on him(by decision 2.1 odds) and predicted 117:110 type decision for Ward, but in all honestly after I watched fight for the second time my scorecard looks like this: 10:9 10:8 9:10 10:9 9:10 10:9 9:10 9:10 9:10 10:9 9:10 10:9 114:113 for Kovalev. Love Andre, I believe he will win rematch, but Kovalev was just simple better man.
I had the same score of 114-113 KOv, but there were a couple of close rounds that could have gone to Ward. I think they didn't really separate themselves from one another to really be considered better than one another. And the term "robbery" is misapplied here, I think. The decision was "debatable", but not a robbery or even really a gift.
