Hi people I'm quite a newcomer to this website but have been for the past 3 years reading threads on here with avid interest, and have since become a huge fan of the sweet science. As part of my University degree in Sports Journalism instead of doing a dissertation I'm doing a major project which is a Boxing magazine. Having noticed that there seems to be a real lack of these out in most newsagents and boxing being such a spoken about sport my idea is to do a boxing magazine with a focus on the british fight game. Talking to professional or amateur fighters Promotors. Trainers. Fans. And many other key members of the fight game. I know on here a few pundits notably Steve Bunce and such boxers like Jamie Moore (one of my favourites) and Willie Limond who seems a genuinly down to earth bloke as well of course Jeff Thomas who seems to be becoming a journalist himself. I'm planning on doing a total of 40 pages, so any help or nudges in the right direction for advice to do with it will be great, hopefully if I do well in this I'd like to start a monthly boxing magazine sometime after University it would be good for the sport and the fans to have more media and more to read on it. Any help or contacts would be much appreciated. Oh and my pick for Fridays heavyweight prizefighter fiasco - Danny Williams. - The guy is one of the good guys - fights anyone anytime - unpredictable and one last hurrah before he retires.
There are quite a few lads on here that you can get in contact with directly to see if they'll help you out. Jamie Moore and Willie Limond as you mentioned, Tony Bellew, Carl Frampton, Kevin Mitchell has posted occasionally and there is a lad that is close to the Mitchell team. Gary Davies just started posting. Billy Nelson if you want a trainers viewpoint. I'm sure I'm missing a few too.
Thanks alot TFFP. I'm sure you might be missing a few as well. I think a former pro that Derry Matthews fought is on here too? And even Derry himself. My biggest coup is to get an interview with Audley after Prizefighter either reflecting on his defeat or victory, despite the fact many fight fans hate him, he's always entertaining (outside of the ring!) Hopefully when the end products done I'll post it up on here for you all to read these are my current idea's I'm going with with a two page article on each idea hopefully which will make it 40 pages in total. • Type of articles – 3/4 interviews with certain fighters from the UK – (easier to do) & with a promoter. • P4P Ranking page • Division ranking page, i.e. heavyweight. Middleweight, Lightweight. • In depth articles on a boxer or something that’s going on in the sport. • Boxing VS UFC? – The future of boxing. • Event reviews from an event I go to myself – get photo’s & write up on. • Contact frank warren, for an interview. • Boxing tips from the gym – go to a gym and have a “how to guide” on for instance the perfect left or right hook or how to use defence, no doubt some readers could potentially do amateur boxing. • Prospect watch pick out 3 up & coming young fighters and talk about their progress. • Boxing internet review recommend sites and boxing media online • Fight night round 4 reviews – in review section. • News from around the boxing world • Reader comments or comments from boxing fans. • Interview with Steve Bunce if if can manage to find him? (he’s on eastside boxing.com) • Boxing “history” section focusing on an event which changed the boxing landscape • Article on the tragedies & triumphs in the ring – how the two are closely linked, how one fighters triumph keys in with another’s tragedy in some super fights. • Boxing ticket prices and PPV argument do boxing fans pay too much to watch the sport? Or is it right to charge so much for some “under par” events • The future of boxing is the sport growing declining? Is it still a major sport or has bad media ruined it? • Boxing comments from fans sections on key events/up & coming fights – this is where ESB comes in. • Amir Khan – The most talked about British boxer but has that loss forever tarnished his resume for the future? Is he hype or the real deal? • Amateur boxing – Olympics watch – which boxers could represent GB at 2012 and how is the GB squad shaping up? • Ring deaths – article based on the safety of the sport whether more could be done to prevent ring deaths or the measures taken have infact stopped them mainly? A look back in history • Many more ideas
Maybe a piece on famous Boxing venues?, great history behind some of those places Good luck with the mag pal
you know what i would be interested in reading - an alaysis into the prizefighter format. i am one of the very few {it seems} that thinks its a circus...fairground strongman stuff...i'd like someone to look at how dangerous it could potenially be, putting two guys in a ring when both are carrying injurys from fights within last hour or two...look at bami v lomax, one had a broken nose and one had stiches, before they fought the final...thats not a fair boxing match. what next?...a boxing royale rumble?..tag teams? anyway, just my opinion...i'd like to see an article on the good and bad of prizefighter sometime.
Firstly, this is a fantastic idea and hats off to you for not going along with the other yuppies at Uni and seeking the easiest final project:good. TFFP has pretty much given you everyone on here inside the game and, from my experience, all are happy enough to answer any questions you may have. I can think of one more substantial contact on ESB- if you are interested in a contact for any of the Klitschko's, there is a bloke on the general forum called 'CHEF'. He is the 'personal cook' of both Wlad and Vitali and is also Wlad's training camp manager. The guy might be a bit of a nuthugger towards his boss, but he has always answered any questions I've had about the brothers and, at times, has gone quite in depth with his responses. Also, I just noticed the 'Boxing V UFC' section:shock:. That should be fun. Slip is quite ambiguous on the issue so maybe you could ask him about UFC? Also, if you need any help in the 'fan' section (I don't know if it will be like 'letters to the editor'), then I'm sure a number of posters on here would be happy to send you their thoughts on certain issues. Good luck with it:good.
