I'm all of not making excuses. But I've seen a lot of people come and go in my gym and the level headed guys who take learning the basics seriously progress far faster then the macho turds who think they are the next Ali two weeks after stepping foot in the gym.

    And I agree, completely.

Level headed is what I am trying to get at. It`s his first spar. Don`t read into too much. Find someone he feels comfortable with, and if he feels over-matched, no shame in saying...`no thanks`. And move on from there.

I`ve seen people forced into fighting carded fights that weren`t ready. Usually doesn`t go well. Have seen people sparring when they clearly aren`t ready. Same deal.

People do need to realize though that the dream of suceeding in this sport then getting your ass kicked once stepping into the ring for the first time doesn`t mean the end of those dreams. For a true fighter, it is often the beginning.

You need to get over the fear of being hit, if you can't deal with being hit you'll go no where in boxing.

Im sure your coach didnt throw you in the ring sparring with out teaching you any defensive at all and quitting after a minute is gonna do nothing but make your coach not want to work with you.

Now if your actually gettin pounded and can't seem to defend your self at all then its time to end the sparring session but from the way you've explained it, it seems like you were just intimidated and didn't want to be hit by the more experience boxer.

honestly i dont think boxing is for everyone, i would suggest trying tennis :good

It wasnt the getting hit part that scared me... It was feeling like I was going to be helpless and look terrible in there for no reason at all..

There is actually a video somewhere of Tyson crying before a fight and his trainer talking to him to calm him and get his head in the fight.

That's quite a well known video.
First time sparring I was awful.
I was only slightly less awful for the next few sessions.

If you want to be a fighter, sometimes you just have to suck it up. Remember what you're going there for. If you feel like you got potential, IE, you're strong and your fast, and you know you can beat some of the guys in there with some training, then do it. The best thing to do is treat it like a game.
