Earlier this year I thought he boxed well against Bayan Jargal, sharp, precise punches and sticking to a crisp game plan, he was even better against McCloskey, the first 8 rounds he was doing brilliantly, beating McCloskey with the jab and finding plenty of right hands to the head and when he let his hands go in combinations to the body he looked great, definitely much improved since his fight with Kevin Mitchell. McCloskey showed a great chin and really dug deep in later rounds to make it more even but the story for me was Prescott's much improved boxing, his trainer has done a great job in making Prescott work to his strengths much more than just relying on punching power. I had Prescott 3 rounds up at the end, so you can imagine my shock when McCloskey got the decision!! but anyway was anyone else impressed with Prescott's improvement?
I have to admit, Prescott proved me very wrong on Saturday. It's obvious that he's been working very hard with his game, and is trying to become more of a boxer-puncher. His jab was good, and his straight right at times was brilliant. He's no slouch, either. The way he was shooting his punches from his stance without giving McCloskey any indication, was impressive. That’s probably why he [McCloskey] had so much trouble early on. Unlike Khan, who lets you know when he’s about to attack, Prescott was very deceptive with his and the speed he threw them at. Like I've just mentioned in another thread, he's not in any worse of a position now than he was before, so I think he still has a chance of working his way back up and proving himself if he wants the Khan fight. But with that said, he did gas badly in the second half, and went back to being that plodder we saw in the Mitchell fight. Oh, and I had it 114-113 to Prescott. That knockdown that shouldn’t have been called, allowed him to edge it on my scorecard. Otherwise it would have been a draw. Some of the rounds were close, and I wouldn’t argue with anyone who had it the other way for McCloskey.
...Wasn't impressed at all tbh. Same ol' Prescott, was surprised McCloskey was putting him on the ropes, looked like the shots were having a bit of an effec. I was less impressed with McCloskey's defense. I loved watching him, but he wasn't getting out the way of enough of the shots. He's got bottle though, and for that I give him credit.
just moved house so havent got my sky or net to see this, but one thing i will say is that prescott is underrated. when he lost a close one to vasquez people acted like he had lost to a journeyman.
Well I thought he won so in that case Prescott did impress me. He was never that bad and I actually rate McCloskey quite well for what he is so to beat him deserves credit. Neither will ever be amazing but both are genuine top 10/15 at the weight.
I too was impressive with Prescott. The loss will make him appear like he is still a sub par fighter but this could have looked like a good win. Prescott main problem is not technique but strategy. He puts so much power into his punches that he uses up too much energy and often falls out of position. If he can go with the strateg of tap, tap, tap rather than bish, bash, bosh then I think he could do much better. Some defensive work and and a speed approach would really help him. It would have made the McCloskey win much clearer.
I haven't see this fight: 1.did his power fade after 4 rounds? 2. was he throwing punches from row z?
1. McCloskey said after that he felt his power dropped so I guess that's a fair opinion. I thought it was mainly because he wasn't landing as much. 2. Yes and no. For the first 6 rounds or so he actually boxed quite tight and stuck behind the jab reasonably well. His best punches landed were wild swings though, including a hail-mary knockdown where he caught Paul with a forearm.
I thought he did look alot better and if he could have done it for the full 12 rounds he would have made the judges decision easier. I think Prescott won but McCloskey was always getting a home decision, I dont really see how McCloskey won by 2 /3 rounds but hey ho. I also think Maidana if they fight would destroy McCloskey, he did show a good chin but Maidana is a better boxer than Prescott and hits as hard if not harder. Cant see McCloskey wining a decent World title.
Same here mate. Prescott surprised me with his discipline in the first half of the fight, his jab was brilliant, had plenty snap. I still think Prescott is dangerous for anyone. He can bang and can box. He's not all about power. Gutted to see him lose the decision though. He deserved to win the fight no doubt.
