All the time. Just not the heavyweight division. I look for skill and unfortunately at heavyweight size and range fighting is what you see today. The finer points of the game, the true skills of the sport, are hard to come by.

Did Schmeling ever fight a southpaw?

Today, fighters have to fight southpaws, trainers don't turn left handers around. In the past, they did because boxers couldn't get fights if they fought southpaw, in addition, a lot of right handed fighters today fight southpaw because they like their right jab and hook.

I haven't checked but I'd guess that Huck has fought more southpaws in training and fighting than Schmeling or anybody of his era.

The orginal question is not a crazy one at all. I like Usyk. However, at this early stage, I pick Max by brutal body shot KO about round 8 or 9. Just too tough. But a good question. And I'll be happy to be proven wrong in future. I think Schmeling is a tad underrated.

Throw a towel over your shoulder and show them how it's done.

Could you recommend any recent fights where you were particularly impressed by a fighter's performance?

How to fight a southpaw is just another of those techniques that many Classic posters lament has been lost over time. In the "good old days" fighters just didn't fight southpaws. It was a time tested technique that worked, first with black fighters then with southpaws. If you don't fight em, you don't lose to em.

This is not true at all. Huck has been exceptional against southpaws. Arslan II was possibly his final act's most impressive performance. He smashed Rossi to pieces. He beat Lebedev, one of the best CW southpaw there's been. The notion that he "has no clue" how to fight them is preposterous.

He did not fight that southpaw with any ability that showed he knew how to fight a southpaw.

Both of these fighters are lower level talents. As typical these days in the hwt division.

The manner to fight a southpaw is to keep your lead foot outside of their lead foot. Offensively fight at close quarters to nullify the stance difference. At range the lead right hand used like a powerful jab down the pipe followed by a left hook would be the way to go.

They aren't in the heavyweight division.

There are lots of different ways to fight a southpaw.

You can watch Huck fight and beat either of the world class cruiserweights I've mentioned to see some different ways.

I like the way he sometimes throws pitty pat punches to keep his opponent occupied, similar to Lomachenko, but unlike Loma he has crushing power. He has a shot against Max no doubt, the German could be rather one paced and plodding at times and Usyk is fast!

He reminds me more of Calzaghe. He has that same supernatural balance...but it's not quite as special because he's that bit bigger. It remains to be seen if the difference in his opposition's balance will make the difference. But he's definitely mixing his punches and like you say the pitty-pat are fast. They're also "mind-mixing" to quote Archie Moore.

I definitely don't get this whole "predictable" thing people are saying about him.

    No, you're bold and correct!

Usyk is a 6'3" highly skilled man, likely entering the ring at 210-215, the same size and weight of Ali and Holmes when they were at their best.

He's very active, has a rock of a chin, and south paw style. Plus as you said he's got quick feet and hands.

I view Usyk as a legit pound for pound man, and would pick him at 215-217 to beat Wilder or Fury.

Povetkin vs Usyk could be an epic fight, and heck yes Usyk if he can get Joshua in the later rounds has a chance to upset him.

Now for the real turn of the tables, if Usyk could beat Schmeling does that mean he could beat Joseph Barrow too?

You can pick out all the newbies who shower praise on a fighter with 13 total bouts. A 13 bout amateur level talent beats the best Max Schmeling? Only a complete loser would intimate that a 13 fight amateur level fighter would beat Joe Louis.
