I remember the TV show of that video, its right before Benn-Eubank II. I don't have time to get into the specifics but I think Toney may beat Benn especially if it was an inside fight, but would have a hellish time with Eubank.
Toney would have struggled with both but would have, rightfully so, gone into both fights as favourite. If Benn could have dragged him into a war he would have had an excellent chance in my opinion. Eubank, however, would have had to put in the same sort of performance he did against Watson in their first fight which, in my most humble opinion, was never as close as some people believe and was one of the greatest displays of subtle boxing in a British ring, but anything else and he would have lost. But another factor is the weight the fight would have been fought at. Middle or Super Middle... Which weight favoured which fighters?
Who's Tony? James Toney however, would've beaten both IMO. Benn falls right into Toneys game, but what a battle it would be! Toney via late stoppage in that one, catching Benn with a sharp counter that floors him and sees him unable to continue. Eubank is cagey, Toney would have to press the action. He'd just work a bit more IMO, though with their chins neither of 'em are going anywhere.
Benn - 160 simply because he was a beast at that weight. Eubank - 168 I think he had constant problems making 160.
peak prime tony would have beat chris i think, at either weight....benn he beats most times unless benn pulls him into a war, which given toneys master boxer status isunlikely....huge benn fan but toney, i think was a different level again...strangely, i think benn would have had a better chance against the superlative roy jones who might not have survived the shellacking benn could have brought on his best day, toneys chin is unsurpassed
If Toney trains like he should then he beats both, if he half arses his training camp like he done quite a lot then Benn and Eubank are big problems for him.
Is any fighter more overrated than Toney? According to some people on here he'd beat Godzilla. He was stood on his head by both Nunn and Jones, and outpointed clearly at least once by Griffin. Doesn't stick out as a great fighter to me.
Nunn?!? He beat Nunn. Guys an old timer, had a bad period at light-Heavy but proved his skillset as a grossly outsized Heavy (he has essentially been a fat super middle since he 'outgrew' that division) Roy would do that to a lot of greats IMO. Toneys resume seems patchy, but there's some real quality on there. Add that to his freakish natural talent and one of the ATG P4P chins an I cannot see why him being ranked in the 85-100 bracket is unfeasible? People often point to the McCallum fights to point out his deficiencies; McCallum is a true great and wiley, experienced and efficient. The Tiberi and Griffin fights are poor performances, Jirov, Holy (not awful at that point, and he stopped him, a hard feat for any former middle) as well as heroic performances against top contenders such as Peter and Ruiz (roids? Really?) prove his effectiveness as a fighter, which makes up for a few bad spells. A perfect fighter? No, but he'd have degrees of success in any era IMO. Greater than Floyd for sure.
