Holmes was unmotivated by that point I think; it was a long reign by then.

After Wlad's loss to Sanders and Brewster, I think whoever controls the championship (if there indeed there was one) would feel safe putting their fighter against Wlad.

King might think that Wlad is finshed etc and might give him a shot at the championship.

At the time there was rumbling that Holmes was avoiding Greg Page. Dokes finally dethroned Weaver. Witherspoon was eager for a rematch. Trevor Berbeck was coming up. Yes Holmes' grip on the Championship was tedious at best. By the time he fought Spinks.

I dont know, he seemed pretty keen to be 50-0. He said he was fighting for history and he was bitter he spent so long in Alis shadow.

Well, if there was only one championship, Wlad would have won it long before Vitali became unretired in Nov. 2008.

OK, I think I understand now. But what is the criteria for winning this mythical championship when it's vacant? is it #1 vs #2 like the Ring use, in that case Vitali might have claimed it beating Sanders (depending on if you thought Sanders was the 2nd best heavyweight around at that time) and Wlad would probably have it by now.
