To be honest I see hardly any resemblance between Napoles and Williams. Williams was more of a stiff, upright technician, while Napoles was much smoother and more fluid with his punches and movements. Williams also looked like he had cement in his shoes at times, whereas Napoles had some of the best footwork I've ever seen. Their demeanor may have been somewhat similar in the way they went about things, but that's about it from what I've seen.

Yeah i'm of a similar line of thinking myself, same wavelength. I usually tend to think that your best bet against Napoles would be someone who has strength on him first and foremost, and puts in good efforts to keep his back on the ropes. So difficult though as Mantequilla's judgement of distance and combination punching on the front foot alike are just out of this world in plain and simple terms. I'm probably talking someone like Basilio, but hey, maybe it's due to him being small for the weight class he was so great and accomplished at (Napoles that is).

Williams i would say if someone could outmaneuvre him they would be at the most advantageous, but then again just look at the footage you just posted and it looks one of the most daunting tasks ever. Someone posted in my Williams-Pryor thread that if Williams came to fight then he would be in trouble, i don't see it that way personally.

Haha, nah I'm not good with words usually, most of my posts are how I talk normally but without the **** accent.

It must be noted though, that Williams' career was spiralling downward at this time. Soon after, he would lose in a controversial, possibly thrown fight to George Costner and then again to Charley Salas - and then to Joe Miceli! All three were respectable fighters, infact the latter two were definitely world contenders at some stage or another, but were not the kind of fighters who should have been thrashing Williams, who as seen, decimated better welterweights in the not too distant past.

The year after, he would surrender the title to the very worthy Jimmy Carter, another of my favourites and the next great lightweight whose career was unfortunately tarnished by various 'Mob' endeavours. 'Lose this bout on purpose and we'll get you a rematch and make more money - or else.'

Of course they look nothing alike on film. The general idea of my post was that neither fighter was afraid to take a punch to give three back. Napoles would bait his face to slip a shot and counter painfully - didn't always work, so he might take a couple of jabs, nothing serious, until a better opportunity arose. Williams was the same, and never voluntarily took anything other than harmless jabs from an opponent who was fearing his stalker's every move.

Napoles was frighteningly good at 140lbs, apparently.

No footage I assume then, if you haven't seen it? I was watching Napoles against Hedgemon Lewis and thought 'man how good must he have been at 140'.

Kinda; like knowing how good Sugar Ray musta been at Welter 'like this but a bit faster, power counts a bit more etc etc'

But man did Napoles face look awful in some of his fights.

Yeah he cut like paper, although not enough for me to factor it into any fantasy matchups (unless facing a particularly slashing puncher). He wasn't quite Vito Antuofermo, although his chin was every bit as solid.

And I think there is at least one 135-140 Napoles fight out there but I've never got around to buying it.

Bratton was known for his impressive gym work ,trainers said he looked as good as Robinson on the speed bag.John Garfield knows a bit about him,he was a quality fighter.
Ike's best fight was his third one with Enrique Bolanos. But I can't give the link to you, because you are a smug little ****:yep

Third, 4 rd stoppage ,via a right hand to the body.Referee Jack Dempsey.
Williams lost 21 lbs to defend his title against Carter,I don't put too much credence in that result.Going into the Carter fight Williams had torn shoulders muscles in his right arm in sparring before the fight.
Blinky Palermo,Williams manager ,told Ike that Carter's people wanted to give him $50,000 to lose the fight, then have a return six months later ,with Ike regaining the crown, Ike refused .

Do you own this or is it posted somewhere?

And yeah I knew about Williams' problems in the Carter fight, but I do like Jimmy nearly as much - one of the lesser greats, but still underrated.

That right hand that busted Brattons jaw traveled no more than 8". It was short and Accurate as they come. Ike Williams had precision punching skills like Joe Louis Archie Moore and Jose Napoles...They all knew how to hit opponents in the right places and always knew where there opponents would be. You cannot teach that. its a sixth sense. A god given ability. Ike Williams was special.

    I agree with this.

Basilio IMO is the stylistic nigthmare for Napoles. Basilio beats him IMO look at the problems Backus caused Napoles and Backus was nowhere near as good as his uncle.

Thats Napoles on the decline the first fight Lewis poses alot of problems with his movement and boxing and Napoels aint as quick as he had been so took a while to adjust to it. The rematch is one of Napoles best performances (post Monzon fight) he takes out Lewis pretty effectivly from my memory, been a while since i watched it.

What fight is it cause i got quite alot of Napoles fights and might have it.
