A Truly Golden Age of lightweights were the 1940s- Ike Williams Beau Jack Bob Montgomery Sammy Angott Willie Joyce Freddie Dawson, and a host of others !
Lavigne was described as a savage fighter ,an ex bareknuckler, he may have caused all sorts of mayhem against some of the lightweights that succeeded him. Bratton was a full fledged Welter.Stopped just 3 times in 87 fights and never counted out .Jack stopped him with an identical tko as Williams, a broken jaw caused the stoppage, he was stopped in his last fight by Del Flanagan with cuts over his eyes ,though he was said to be in a dazed condition.
What A fighter was Johnny Bratton...When He was healthy without chronic jaw problems, he was a joy to behold....Handsome, flashy and a great combination fighter was he....He was too brave for his own good...
I think Williams-Duran is a tossup (OK, maybe a slight edge in favor of Ike), but the forward coming Armstrong would end up taking too much punishment. Williams by late TKO in that one. Ike Williams is there with Dick Tiger among the forgotten legends in my "book".
I like both Duran and Armstrong over Ike. I believe it would take the late seventies version of Duran though...a more measured approach. Armstrong I feel does not get the credit due him for being such a difficult opponent to be in the ring with...Watch him completely crowd his opponent's lead hand. Armstrong applies pressure, but it is pressure that is to the side of the opponent ( usually the left side), not straight on matching strength. I think Hank is too rough even for Ike, anyone capable of standing up to the bpmbs of Ceferino Garcia (who incidentally KO'd Fred Apostoli) takes Williams.
Great fights, great posts, interesting thread ! I like Ike in this one against Armstrong..... And Duran against Ike....in my opinion....
How good was the BOBCAT ? Bob Montgomery,Ike Williams, and Beau Jack were as good as it gets in the lightweight division,in the TOUGH 1940s. He was a lean, strong in your face lightweight, who i saw at MSG in 1943,win the crown from Beau Jack, and five months later lose the title back to Beau Jack. Montgomery kod Ike williams in Philly in 1944, and in 1947,Ike Williams returned the honor, and kod Montgomery in Philly also.He was past his peak by then, too, too many wars. But the fight I shall never forget was when Al Bummy Davis,a 10-1 underdog, kod Montgomery in the first round with a series of left hooks, unlike any i ever saw,in1944.Just think ESB, that in the course of 6 months,in 1944 Bob Montgomery fought,Ike williams, Al Bummy Davis, and the prime Beau Jack twice. In a Six month period ! Floyd Mayweather, are you listening ? Why, aside from Ike Williams, Beau Jack,at his best would have overwhelmed Mayweather, with volleys of left hooks, right crosses, uppercuts, bolo punches etc.Too bad aside from the Beau Jack ko by Williams in 1948,when Beau Jack was wearing down, there are no films of him before, when he sold out MSG, more times than any fighter in history...I'm privileged to have seen this trio of Montgomery, Jack, and Ike Williams at their best...cheers V...
I got Armstrong. The Duran fight is a pick em for me...I dont think I will ever have definitive answer a either way. Williams is just a bad fight for any lightweight and Duran was just not really tested against fighters of his ilk at 135...he tore up a ton of different styles but an elite guy who was stronger than him I dont think he was all that blooded against at the weight..There was certainly some discomfort against Thompson. At the same time Duran is better in enough departments to quite possibly overcome this.
He beats both , Duran by bloody dec and Armstrong by tko late.. Williams competition at lightweight was superior to Duran's imo. He would be stronger and hit harder, though , not as quick or intense . Ike's measured power would begin to tell on Duran and, only his great head movement would enable him to ride the big shots and hang in there. Ike would test Duran to the body too ,something that rarely happened. Armstrong would come in as allways, but, be picked off by the jab as he did, and short hooks would wear him down . Hank seldom gave you time, or room enough to land consecutively on him but Willliams could thread a needle with his power shots, and he, like Armstrong , was a master of short punching . I think Ike busts him up ,probably with eye damage.
