I have heard a couple of stories... A young teenage Tony Ayala Jr.(maybe 15 or 16) Sparred with then Welterweight King Pipino Cuevas. Not only did Ayala hold his own, He Had Cuevas reeling before Cuevas' irritated manager called a stop to the session. And as they were leaving,Cuevas' manager was scolding him for the performance. A young Oscar De La Hoya sparred with Julio Cesar Chavez. Chavez moved around as De La Hoya was getting cute. Finally De La Hoya Let loose with a very hard Combination. Chavez Smiled & shook his head, The Next time De La Hoya attacked, Chavez Nailed him with a perfect right hand, Dropping De La Hoya to his Knee. Everyone rushed in and that was the end At Gleason's gym in New York Pipino Cuevas actually broke the bracket which hold on the speed bag with a left hook. The only other fighter with that kind of crushing power to ever do that...George Foreman.
..........I hadn't heard about this. I'd be interested to hear what that article says. He had to have had real mixed feelings about finding out. Not sure I'd want to know if it was me.
This is my favorite thread. I wonder how strict Cus was. I've heard him described as a selfish man who cared very little beyond wether a kid could fight or not. When I see him in interviews, though, I can't help but love the guy.
Charley Burley is reported to have knocked out Elmer Ray in sparring. It is also said that Tommy Hearns used to beat up Tony Tucker.
Steward claimed this in an interview i have. Used to "whoop his ass" might have been the spot on term. If Tucker went 100% it might be different. :!:
