In 1993, was there a bigger fight than Lewis vs Bowe?

A better Heavyweight fight was made in '93: Holy-Bowe II.

 

No, another fight was made, not necessarily a better one. Bowe was supposed to face the man who beat him on the Olympics 5 years earlier and reneged. Had this fight come off it would have been HUGE!

 

It certainly would have been. Bowe ducked Lennox,just as Tyson did three years later.

 

Bowe and Lewis would have been a great fight around this time bcause Lewis was reckless and less reluctant. It probably would have sucked in 96-97 when they tried to pull it off. Bowe would have knocked out Lewis before Mcall did in a war.

 

For the sake of Bowe's well being,it's a good thing it did n't take place in 96-97

 

Bowe should have fought Lewis about 2 months after he faced Gonzalez so he had zero down time. Thats the last time Bowe got himself in top boxing shape.

Lewis was offered a purse of $13.5million to fight Mike, a massive $5.5million more than the $8million offered to & accepted by Holyfield.
Problem was, Lennox refused to accept Don King's contract options, then kicked up a fuss because King wouldn't budge.

So Lewis was paid $4million (notice this is smaller than the difference between the purse offered to Lewis & the purse offered to Holyfield) step-aside money to shut him up, while Tyson fought Holyfield first.
The idea was that Tyson would blast out the "washed up" ageing Holyfield, then defend his belts against Lewis later.

However, Tyson lost twice to Holyfield & was banned for 2 years for the bites (it should have been a permanent ban in my opinion).
Lewis was happy to defend against the utterly shot-to-**** overweight Tyson in 2002, who no longer had King as his manager & no longer presented any threat. I still find it odd that Tyson KO'd Botha in '99, then Botha got a Majority Draw against Briggs in '99, then a win against Steve Pannell in '00, which lead to Lennox granting him a title shot, which surely Tyson deserved far more. I think Lewis was waiting for Tyson to inevitably lose all motivation & go off the rails again, a sly tactic.

 

I dont think it was ever Kings intentions to have Tyson face Lewis for the simple reason that Lewis would not sign a long term deal with King. That being said, Tyson wasnt ready for Lewis after fighting Bruno anyway. Tyson vacated the WBC belt after fighting Bruno I believe? He fought Seldon won the WBA belt, was supposed to fight Holyfield then Moorer for his IBF belt then Morrison.

 

How do you think Tyson-Lewis would've went, if Mike got with Giachetti after beating Bruno, then won two hard wars against McCall & Mercer?
Subsequently facing Lennox in a genuine Superfight, unlike their farcical mismatch in '02.

 

It could've been the greatest super heavyweight fight of all time...Even better than Gabe Brown/Julius Long, which also failed to materialize.

 

I agree, it would've been greater than Lewis-Vitali.

Lewis was at his absolute best making roadkill of Tommy Morrison.

Beating two clowns and a mentally retired, scared to death Bruno wasn't anywhere near adequate preparation for Lennox.

Holyfield was prepared to give more ground to King in order to get the opportunity - but he needed to as a result of the bad KO loss to Lewis and the underlying health stories that were doing the rounds at the time.

Lewis was making a killing no matter who he fought because his management took a lower cut. He certainly re-wrote the rule of boxers managing their own affairs, following on from Leonard in that respect.

 

Riddick Bowe said to me after the Tyson Bruno fight that Tyson looked like ****, his footwork was horrible and he was going to get his ass beat. I looked at him like he was nuts, but in retrospect, Tyson was just coming forward in a straight line throwing one punch and falling in and he was right.
Lewis would have probably beat him, he wasnt going to fight like Bruno fought, he was a much better counterpuncher. Tyson needed what he got from Brooks, a series of fights to correct a lot of his mistakes. Tyson made the mistake of not going back to basics when he got out of jail. Its ashame Rooney was a drunk and a bad gambler around the time Tyson got out of jail because they could have possibly reunited, but it only gave Tyson an excuse not to rehire Rooney once Rooney sued him.

Giachetti would have been a vast improvement over Bright, who knew zero. Bright was still around when Tommy Brooks was training Tyson. They both stood on opposite sides of the ring apron during training giving Tyson completely the opposite instructions. Bright was a complete moron who should have never been close to a boxing ring.
