I dont think byrd was that good. He recently went down to lightheavyweight and was knocked out. I think this shows how overrated the heavyweight division has been these past 7 years. Bryd would not have done well in the 1950s heavyweight division.
He was a walking corpse. Did you see the picture where he almost looks weight because of how sickly he looks?
How many "bingo's" did he need to knock out weak-chinned Patterson? Oh, sorry, I forgot, he failed to knock him out. Byrd by decision in 10 bouts out of 10. Johannson was that bad.
No one EVER had it all over by landing one punch on Byrd, and Ingo is obviously not becoming the first. He's not even close to Ike, Wlad or Vitaly in punching power. Liston wasn't feather-fisted, but I'd hardly call him a KO artist, even Vitaly with his overrated power punched harder than Sonny.
Have you watched the fight? Have you seen the sate of Byrd? I'm no Byrd fan, but Byrd would've done very, very well in the 50's IMO, when the best guys were a past-prime (but admittedly effective) smaller guys like Walcott and Charles. Marciano stops him, but Byrd was a very effective fighter who went from middle to HW. Quite similar to the 50's guys in some respects, I think Byrd would at least hold his own against those guys.
Yeah, remind me what's Liston's KO percentage? He had good power, but I wouldn't call it exceptional.
I use my eyes, not statistics. Junior Witter for example doesn't have a high K.O %, but it's clear to see he can really bang. Liston was clearly a destroyer.
I use my eyes too, and unlike true one-punch KO artists, Liston, similar to Foreman and V. Klitschko, was beating men down, not knocking them out cold. Heavy-handed guys, but lacking handspeed, sharpness and precision, to become KO artists.
I think that one of the best ways to beat Ingo was to draw him to you and fight cautiously. Ali famously embarassed Johanssen in sparring using this tactic. If you came at Ingo, you were risking disaster, but Ingo was always cautious on the front foot. This would be a dull fight, with Ingo slowly advancing and getting his jab parried by Byrd, who'd do just enough work to win rounds. Even if Ingo does land a right hand, he's not going to land it often enough to KO/TKO Byrd, who had both a very good chin and a very good defence. Byrd by UD.
If you're destroying people clean or wiping them out with a number of punches, you're a big puncher, simple as that.
