    Absolutely diabolical.
B T W, The referee was Irishman Andrew Smythe ,who was the third man in the London/ Johannson fight, and also the London/ Richardson "Brawl In Porthcawl". Controversy seems to have followed him around.
Its interesting that Machen suffered mental health problems ,later in his career, you can't help wondering if the ridiculously late stoppage in the Ingo fight might have had some lasting effects?

    It's OLD SCHOOL refereeing.
The referee is there to enforce the rules and count to 10. The fighter's safety is the responsibility of his second.

Perhaps we should compare and contrast this to a good stoppage, like this one:

Notice how he makes perfectly sure Mundine is out and he's not jumping the gun at all.

Absolutely NOT the first responsibility of a referee is the fighters safety.

    The role of the referee

    Referees have the following roles:
    • Gives instructions to both boxers before the fight
    • Determines when to start or stop a count when a fighter is down
    • Determines when a foul is so egregious that a warning should be given or points taken away
    • Signal when the round is over
    • Determines when one fighter's health will be endangered by more blows and thus, stops the fight.

I'm talking about the old school of refereeing. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the referees of the early Queensberry rules era were not the ones responsible for "saving" the fighter ..... It was more important that the referee gave the man every chance to get up and fight back, by completely the count.
A fighter's seconds could throw in the towel at any time or come to his rescue, thus retiring him from the fight.

The Ike Williams v Beau Jack stoppage was perhaps a bit late/brutal too.

    Norton-Cooney maybe too.

****in ******* wasnt even watchin the fight and missed the 2nd knockdown, which shoulda been over there and then. Its these fools that give oxygen to the 'ban boxing' brigade.

And just for the record, whilst all clips shown here are terrible no doubt, i still cant get over the beau jack - ike williams fiasco. The referee coulda got him killed
