Irish Boxing

Would you guys be able to explain the situation about Irish titles, How long can you keep them for without defending ? For example does lee still have his? What do you guys think of the rule that you can fight for it if you have one Irish grandparent? My take on it is that there are a lot more fights that could be made thus making it more competitive. On the minus side how much does it mean to the fighter who only has one Irish grandparent? This was how callaghan qualified I think.

 

I dont how long one can hold on to a title, as Kevin McBride seems to have held on to the heavyweight title forever without defending it. But theres one thing for sure, with the amount of Irish boxers turning professional lately, and with the added tv coverage there is going to be a lot more Irish title fights.:yep

 

Has anyone got a prediction, of what Irish boxer could bring home the bacon, so to speak at these olympics. Who can bring home a medal, I go for experience, Sutherland or Egan, and if I have to pick one, it will be Sutherland.

 

Yea its funny I was looking at the irish titles on boxrec and some of the titles had went for 10 years wihout contest. Now I know there is some very smart boxing guys here, could you explain this to me? To me it seems very stupid.

 

Young Nevin is the pick to get a medal, for me nutter.But it all depends on the draw.

 

like I have said elsewhere, you can get 200/1 for Nevin to gold and 80/1 for Egan!!!!

Try centrebet - I'll had a few quid on all Irish boxers - as well as others.

 

I would say that Egan is our best chance because of his experience

Up until recently there was no real boxing 'scene' in Ireland. Most of our guys fought in the US or the UK and hence the demand for two Irish fighters in the same weight class to not only meet but fight for the Irish title wasn't as great.

We've a lot more pros now than we used to aswell, with a large amount of guys having turned pro after the recent success of professional boxing in this country since Bernard Dunne came back and Brian Peters signed that deal with RTÉ.

Simply put no fights in Ireland meant there was no need for Irish title fights.
Now we've plenty of cards and fights in Ireland, hence a relatively large amount of Irish title fights.

The Irish Heavyweight and Cruiserweight titles will probably be fought for soon enough. We've a good few Cruiserweights coming through the ranks and Belshaw/Rogan/Timlin/McBride/Kenna/Clancy will surely have two of them fight at some stage and the Irish Heavyweight title will be on the line then.

What is quite puzzling is that Colin Kenna and Luke Simpkin(English but egilible for the Irish title) fought two years ago in Ireland over 8 rounds. Two rounds more and they could have had it as an Irish title fight.

 

Theres definetely some good fights to to made for the Irish titles. A question, for anyone. Paddy Hyland is running a show in September, will his sons be defending there Irish titles on it, and are the tickets for sale now.:huh

 

Well ticketmaster only have tickets available for Gary Hyde's show and Brian Peters next one at the Gleneagle hotel at the minute but seeing as they'd probably be able to sell all the tickets for a Hyland show without having to go through a company like ticket master it's possible they won't go on sale there at all. So haven't a clue really.

I think if they can find a suitable opponent then the lads will defend their Irish titles but I'm expecting some Kenyans(just a hunch )

Exciting times for the Hyland's, Pauly will probably find himself in the proper European rankings next month(well this month) after his win over Callaghan and Patrick is in the European Union rankings at the moment.

Fortunately the EBU don't treat the Irish title with the respect it deserves even when the opponent is of a high quality. While in comparisons Italians or French will be pushed up the rankings by defending their national titles against absolute scrubs.

I wouldn't hesitate in getting Pauly nice and high in those rankings, I'd have no fear in matching him with guys like Sean Hughes or one of the Italians in Mora or Bartolozzi who would really help to raise his ranking.
