Firstly congrats to Jamie Conlan on a 6rd clear points decision, I hope he gets the breakthrough fight he deserves soon. It's interesting that Maloney got Kevin Satchell the TV exposure last night by feeding Martin Power to him, while Jamie was tucked away at the back end of the bill. Satchell and Paul Edwards both turned down contests with Jamie, but Jamie is the boxer who is refused the exposure, it's clear where Maloney's priorities lie. Funny that lie is an appropriate word you associate with little Frank. Also commiseration to Ian Timms on what seemed in good effort on losing on points to Juho Haapoja last night in Finland, it was always going to be difficult to come away from Finland with a decision. I suppose we will find out in the next few days if Haapoja deserved the victory or not. Either way there is no shame for Ian in losing a decision in Finland, hopefully he can come back stronger from it. It's terrific to see 110 boxers weight-in for the nationals. I remember back in 1996 , 104 boxers weighing in and boxing officals were ecstatic about that, and now not only have we strength in numbers but strength in talent also. Hey, you stole that idea from my post last week! Good article though,Imagine a Frampton-Nevin six rounder, Id pay a bit to see that!
Thought the judging was terrible at the Stadium in the early session on Saturday, even though it probably didn't cost anyone a deserved win. It was not unusual to see a judge going say 20-12 to a boxer while another would go 12-7 to the other fighter. Hickey and Nolan were very sharp as well as Donovan bar that one mistake. We should remember that Moylette was just back after surgery and was rusty but that's not to take anything from Wall who had a great gameplan and the bottle to carry it out. Another strange anomaly in the new scoring (which generally is good) was shown in the Wall fight, two judges went for Ray big time, but because the other three scored much lower and were more similar the two big margins for Moylette didn't count.
Conlan and Wilton are both getting messed about by the likes of Maloney. They are both ahead of the likes of Satchel, who was made to look better than he is against Power - who is well past his best. Satchel was just a fresh, strong fighter, but he has no boxing technique and Conlan would absolutely school him. Wilton would have the beating of him too. The truth is that this is just another example of how badly we miss having an Irish promoter to look after our fighters. Maloney has no interest in Irish boxing. What we need is the likes of Brian Peters being brought into the fold at Sky, we need an Irish promoter with TV. These English promoters are never going to put in the work on the ground to build up our talent and post-2012 Olympics this will become even more apparent when we will have a few more talented lads turning pro. I would hope that the likes of Brian Peters is on to Adam Smith at Sky to try and negotiate a few fight dates per year in Ireland and bring through the next generation of pro's as well as the providing opportunities to our current boxers.
The Haapoja-Tims fight was a damn good scrap, and I thought Haapoja won it close but clear, as did the judges, Tims or his team weren't protesting, at least in the ring. Neither guy took a step backwards, and Tims got a big ovation from the crowd after the fight. I'm guessing it will be up on youtube soon enough.
Thanks for the update. I was over in Helsinki for the Helenius-Chisora fight and the atmosphere was electric especially during the Finnish national anthem:good
First of all hard luck to Tims in his effort last night. Was close on the judges score card and it may very well have been a robbery. I'll tell you what, Andy Lee will end up looking like a right twat if his fight with Sturm doesn't come off. But I remain confident, Sturm offered a fight to him before Macklin so hopefully it gets signed pronto. Seems the plan was to pit him against Lorenzo but HBO wouldn't accept, which is fair enough.
This was in Seinäjoki, around from where Haapoja is from, in a smaller arena. Still always a good atmosphere for a small place whenever he fights there. The Helenius-Chisora has cast a bit of a shadow over fights here, as now everyone assumes every decision lost by the away fighter is a robbery. I blame Sauerland, ****s.
No it wasn't.. Tims clapped his hands to Haapoja and showed with his hand that Haapoja is the winner when the referee was about to rise Haapoja's hand. Clear but close victory for Haapoja. A great fight! Respect to both men!
