thats exactly how it went down. Fortunately I wasnt there to make friends i was there to ask questions. J Joshua Clottey liked my style i was talking to him for a good 10 minutes after the press confrence and did a little interview with him. we'll be getting him on the show in the future. Guys its official The erin go brawl show was cancelled due to bad ticket sales.A real kick in the nuts for all the irish guys boxing on it and especially their fans who had bought air and fight tickets.
yeah i got a text off Danny O'Connor a few hours ago confirming it. I for one am gutted i would have expected it to sell well next week seeing as it was in and around paddys day
I agree alot of tickets would have shifted next week and the walk up sales probably would have being big also but the sales to date must have being very low for irish ropes to call it off. What does this say about Andy Lees marketability john duddy would have sold it out and must be laughing up his sleeve at the Mc Loughlins or is it once more the curse of Wayne Mc Cullough i have never known a guy to have so many fights fall through.I am especially gutted for guys like Eddie Hyland and Jamie Power, the others are based in the US so probably will get a chance to fight in the garden someday.
I can't say I agree with a lot of your sentiments bambam. Boxing has a healthy interest and following here in this part of Ireland. I work in a largely male dominated workforce where the talk for the first part of the week was all about "big Rogie's" victory and his potential world title fight. Next week a lot of the talk will be of McCloskey's British title defence. I don't pretend to rank the interest shown in boxing on a par with soccer or GAA but the apathy you talk about is not apparent in Belfast. What Belfast is lacking is a promoter to run with the sport, and I hope that will be remedied soon. BBC N.Ireland and UTV constanting publicise any achievement by our boxers, and the main papers[local] The Irish News and Belfast Telegraph run articles on fighters on a regular basis. The Irish News have three excellent boxing journalist [ Eamonn O'Hara, Thomas Hawkins and Brendan Crossan] and The Belfast Telegraph have two[David Kelly and Jack Magowan].This has been the best time in Irish boxing since the McGuigan era, and not necessarily for the quality of the boxers[ although some of the amateurs are of an exceptional quality, but I'm refering to the professionals], but because of the willingness of RTE and BBC N.I to broadcast Irish promotions. And the amount of Irish promoters is increasing all the time, that's also very encouraging. So bambam things aren't as dire as you believe. The profile of the sport is increasing all the time, that's a positive we can all embrace. here here ardy, belfast is made to be a fight city. no one big football team, people literally dont care at all about Antrim GAA whilst the ulster rugby team remain healthy they have the same small pocket of supporters that have been and will be going for years. Dont know what it is about Belfast as well but George Kimball points it out when he singles belfast out as one of the top places to watch a fight, average joe's here want to see a scrap. your so right about the promoter, one guy that with the help of some good local fighters can make friday/saturday nights fight nights with an ulster hall bill once a month and a bigger Kings hall/odyssey show 2/3 times will do really well with the right people and marketing behind them
I can't say I spend any time (or have spent much time) up in Belfast so can't comment. You obviously know what you are talking about, though, so I'm sure you are 100% in what you say. I know Belfast has a good history as far as boxing goes and I'm sure that could be brought back to life if some of the circumstances you talk about come around. And while you talk about potential it still remains that it's not the case at the moment. Hopefully someone can take the bull by the horns and help fulfil the potential. I'm afraid that my points still stand on the whole though. Belfast is quite clearly the exception to the rule in this case. Boxing just doesn't attract a lot of support or hold the publics interest (to the extent we probably wish it did) elsewhere in Ireland. I presume the most concentrated area for boxing fans is Dublin. However, I'd say the actual % of the population that are into boxing is still very small. The same basically goes for the rest of the country too. I'm not doubting that there are real pockets of strong boxing support in various areas but on the whole the country in general falls into the bracket I was talking about. It's actually pretty strange considering that the one sport Ireland has always been consistently successful in has been boxing.
its on onthegrind boxing radio on the main page or you can get it here www.onthegrindboxing.com i did it before i went to the states so some of the info is a bit outdated like thaxton being the euro champ ect.. i think hes on an hour or so into it
Btw bohs are my team also. I often say the same about them being my team and get the same odd looks , Even when i explain i was brought up in phibsboro they still don't understand. I wonder can we win again. Anyway about murray from what ive seen of him i like a lot hes got great technique but his opposition has been limited and a couple of times he was on rte he had i recall at least one controversial win with what was to me a low blow accidental or not his opponent should of had 5 min to recover. What really pissed me off that night was the bias that rock and dowling seem to have saying it was on the belt. The second night i think it was an early retirement by his opponent, Both of these occasions imo disheartened murray, but now with peters the next year will give us a better view of how far murray can go.
Just read this now, very dissapointing itn was going to be a good showcase of irish talent . hopefully something can be arranged for all concerned in the near future. Was dean byrne supposed to be on this card? Was this an irish ropes promotion? If so its another black eye for them
was talking to dean last night he didnt even know the card was off... yeah it was an irish ropes promotion. Ill say one thing when i was in new york last week i didnt see any posters in the irish bars i was in didnt think of it at the time.....
