Maloney wants Rock for Sutherland 29 June 2009 - By Mark Doyle Rising super-middleweight star Darren Sutherland is being pushed towards a mouth-watering domestic dust-up with Jim Rock. Sutherland’s promoter, Frank Maloney, has been thrilled by the way in which his undefeated charge, who is now 3-0, has taken to life in the paid ranks. Indeed, the Londoner believes that Sutherland is almost ready to challenge for a major belt and has set his sights on the evergreen Rock, who has won Irish titles at four different weights. "The progress Darren has made with his trainer Brian Lawrence is astonishing, and he could be ready for a title later this year,” Maloney enthused. "When he turned professional in December, I thought it would be 18 months before he'd be ready, but there is no stopping him. "There are some good Irish-Americans who could challenge him for the all-Ireland title, but the opponent I would like is Jim Rock. ”It would be a great fight between two Dubliners who would be so fired up because of local bragging rights." Sutherland is to take on Gennadiy Rasalev at York Hall on Monday and, provided he overcomes that hurdles, will box again on the undercard of the Tony Jeffries-headlined bill in Sunderland ten days later.
i think Rock could be a step too far for darren at the moment. what about joe rea if he's still around?
sutherland would beat rock easy imo.....one decent claen shot will knock jim down as i believe daz is a huge hitter. he has not shown his power yet for me as all his opponants have been very negative and have held high guards:bbb
I hope it comes off and i hope Rock makes Maloney pay big for the pleasure. As of the fight i think Sutherland is just too young and fresh for Jim that said if it goes to the later rounds then who knows.
Lee thinks he vacated the titlte as he ain't defended it. That said, interviewed him a few months back (Lee) and he wouldn't rule out that fight down the line.
Just hear Dunne's next prospective opponent. Not overly impressed with it (if it turns out to be true). Its a very winnable fight all the same (again, if it is who I was told). Its not that its bad match making but its just seemed to take a long time to get to doing a deal that could have been done a while ago. Then again, maybe Peters is setting things up to suit him all along, hes a cute ***** and no mistaking, so I wouldn't put it past him. Anyway, the fight is to be announced within the next week or so. Before anyone asks me, I can't tell you who it is just yet. However, as soon as i get the nod then I'll let you all know
