Kind of a silly term then ,pound for pound. You may as well say, who was the best overall as poundage doesn't factor in. Sugar Ray Robinson is just the best, pound for pound is meaningless.
A lot of folk seem to battle with the term 'pound for pound' and if you take it literally, then I can see why. It's just an expression though.
Fair enough, guys. I did think the literal bit was part of it, not all. I think it may stem from seeing that "pound for pound" film on SRR when I was younger!
my only comment on this is that there is too much emphasis put on winning titles multiple times at the same weight....like ali three times....robinson five times etc...as if that defines their legacy as much as anything else... "the three time champion of the world....".......winning it three times usually means of course that you lost it three times (although in fairness in ali's case he only lost it once) kinda left of topic i know.
who is a much better fighter in the lower weight class? Ali is a 220 pound if he was a middle weight hed be the fastest ever no doubt
Please enlighten us with the difference between the 'mythical' Ali and the 'actual' Ali? Obviously the mythical one is the one beats Foreman, Frazier, Liston and any other heavyweight who ever lived. So what was the actual Ali?
Possibly for the same reason SRR was originally given the title p4p best, because they compared him to Joe Louis, claiming were they the same weight Ray would win. People have put their own spin on the term since to suit their own agendas, but it was simply coined in reference to SRR, when the " Heavyweight " title meant something, and the great Joe Louis was the holder. The respected boxing scribes of the time agreed that the only thing stopping the sugarman beating Joe was size, and weight, and that he was the better fighter.
