How does losing in the fashion he did to Margarito make Cotto a hype job ?

And if Cotto is a hype job, what does that say about Shane, Zab, etc ?

 

Although The cotto/margarito and Calzaghe/Lacy fights were similar in the fact that both had 2 star names going into the fight expected to win or "should" win because of their power when they were constantly pressured and forced backwards to the ropes. Eventually both couldn't take any more punishment and were handed their first real losses. Now here is where it gets different. Cotto was a more established fighter who already had wins over ATGS in Mosley, and Judah, He had fought at the championship level before and had the experience but was just OUTPUNCHED by a bigger guy whos style he was not used to. So the answer to your question is NO cotto is not like lacy. Cotto will be back from this. Will he ever beat Margarito? I think its too soon to tell, we need to see how he comes back in his next fight.

 

No - Cotto is for real and actually has the tools and is skilled. He will come back and succeed. He just faced someone a lot bigger who walked him down, although If you watch the fight, unlike in the Calzaghe-Lacy bout, he was competitive throughout. Styles make fights, and Margarito was all wrong for Cotto, because Cotto is not just a boxer, he is a banger.

I'll break it down for you Noob, here goes:
First of all the fights you refer to, Calzaghe-Lacy and Cotto-Margarito arent even remotely similar. One was a thorough beatdown of a fighter who hadnt accomplished much if anything on his way to a portion of a title(Lacy) see also: Hypejob

Cotto-Margo was FOTY candidate easily(see below for a better comparison)

Cotto has been a reigning defending champion in 2 weight classes, ruined many unbeaten records along the way in dominating fashion, never avoided any fighter, and fought the best at every opportunity.

So in all its a horrible comparison. A better one for you to think about is Tommy Hearns

And to the thread starter. No way. As many have mentioned Cotto was very competetive and held his own thru much of the bout. Lacy was totally dominated. While there is a small chance that the fight took alot out of Cotto to where it might affect his confidence, I dont think that is the case. He is the real deal. I hope he comes back on par with himself of old or even better for the experience. And those saying he gassed like his stamina was a issue, please dont undermine the work Marg did by walking him down. He made him be very mobile and landed some punishing body shots as well as shots to the shoulders elbows, wherever he could. It was the pace of the foght and Margo imposing his will/pace that gassed him. Not his stamina.

I never heard of PRproud before today, and so I have no stake in defending him.

But he completely disagreed with the thread-starter and his opinions are much closer to yours than to the threadstarter's.

So while I agree with both you and PRproud, and disagree completeley with the threadstarter, I can't see why you unloaded on a Cotto fan who was saying essentially the same things you said.

Lacy got the crap beaten out of him for 12 rounds, Cotto had his will broken in the latter half of the fight

 

I dont know where Judah ranks in terms of best of all time but hes definately one of the best jr. welter/welterweights of this era. He is one of the quickest and slickest fighters around.

 

I think Cotto was always better then Lacy but the Margarito fight could have ruined him..

 

Look at both of there faces at the end of the fight......... Not much difference.
