I said I rank Dempsey 11th, which is ahead of hundreds if not thousands of boxers. Now if you feel that is below Butterbean I dare suggest you rate Butterbean much higher than I do.

And how can you even take seriously anything Tunney (or Sharkey) had to say about Dempsey? Could we imagine him saying something like: "I was sure lucky to come along at the time I did, because in Dempsey I didn't really have much to beat! 15 years later I would have been up against a prime Louis, and would have had little hope of ever becoming champion" No, of course not... he will naturally say whatever makes himself look good!
