I have a hard time with this simply because heavyweights have increased so much in size and those in the elite category are also skilled. I think if this was a p4p discussion Dempsey would rank higher than discussing him either in terms of career accomplishments or H2h.

Still thinking about where to rank him. Louis, Ali, Holmes, Lewis, Foreman and Holyfield l think are all ahead of him as is Wlad. Fighting for the last 3 spots are Marciano, Liston, Frazier, Tyson and Dempsey. I think one of those spots has to go to Frazier. I think another one has to go to Liston, leaving Marciano, Tyson and Dempsey fighting for the last spot. And that's as far as l can get with this. The more l think about it the more l lean towards Marciano not necessarily based on H2h but based on 49-0. How does the only guy who never lost not make the list?

And as much as l respect the people who saw him, if l'm not mistaken that poll was done in 1960 which was 55 years ago. The vast majority of fighters on most top 10 lists have the majority of fighters on their list post 1960 so this isn't so much re-writing history as it is recording it post 1960.

I'm not sure I could put him as high as 15.Ezzard Charles is no doubt better than Manassas Jack on a p4p list and must start at evens h2h.
If Walcott could walk Louis on to his counter punches I'm sure he could do to Dempsey, but could he keep him on the deck ???

As resident "troll" and legally defined "old white guy" I'd rank Dempsey up there with Johnson, Louis and Ali as the most culturally important boxers, irrespective of their boxing ability. Just like Babe Ruth and Wilt Chamberlain are similar...they changed the way their games were played.

Dempsey changed the way people viewed boxers....he and Ruth were the first media superstars.

So what's the excuse the 2nd time? Some people just cant let go of the legends. And get so caught up and don't believe what there own eyes see. Sorry for stepping on your toes, but in my opinion, and maybe mine alone, and based on what Ive heard in the many articles IVE read on him, including the articles on his refusal to fight the best black fighters, and the little video Ive seen and you too because there's very little tape available. He reall y wasn't that special, just a larger version of Ray Mancini that just so happened to come along at the right time.

I have no problem ranking him Top 10 or even Top5 Media Sports Stars of All Time.

Hey B, you have a thing against me for quite awhile, when I started posting we even exchanged private E-mails...? Now you wish to confront me at every post you could. I haven't changed but you have..
Whatever positive things I say or quote about Jack Dempsey you will challenge, so what's the use.? One simple thing. Why in heaven would Schmeling praise Jack Dempsey when it was Joe Louis who destroyed Max in one round ? Doesn't make sense...Whatever, you think what you wish, and I should think I should have the same
privilege ? No one corners the market on integrity...

I wish Burt soul follow his own advice there.

Rather than attacking people for ranking Dempsey number 11.

Luf, I don't attack people who rate Dempsey #11 as a HWT. I JUST THINK THEY ARE WRONG... I have that right to think whatever I wish about the ability of the prime Jack Dempsey, and so should you. What irks me was not what you said but whenever another poster trying to act noble constantly uses the disparaging term "OLD WHITE GUYS" that tees me off.My dad and even I fall in this category ,and it is an insult for millions of people who have not hurt anyone. So let US agree to disagree on occasion...cheers...

What is inherently disparaging about the term "old white guys"? You made a list of guys who were a) old and b) white. I merely made an observation. You have carried it to some moral or ethical ground.

Had Dempsey fought and beat Wills and Greb you could have a strong case for the top 10.

JD had the style, power and speed to beat higher ranked fighters, it was just never really proven. His title run isn't the best, and he had some poor results vs lesser competition.

Top 11-16 for me.

This is a lazy copout.

Everyone loves to throw stones at Burt, even when he makes a great point.
