I once heard the phrase "entertaining con artist" applied by a sports writer to Earl Woods. I'd say it fits here too.
Im baffled about your question.. I can not find any great boxing writer from Finland granted that. but neither I can find as embarrassing disgrace what Bert was. You can keep him as your Great boxing writer, he fits you americans well!:good
Who does Finland claim with any pride? Any boxing champs at the moment? Surely with all the alphabet belts the great nation of Finland has their fair slice of the pie.
What has being from Finland got to do with having an opinion.how many wars do Finland cause, how fake are ppl from finland, how over the top are finland,I'd rather be from Finland any day
Maybe, but not if youre considered a boxing expert. I think that is where this stemmed from, Malibua attacking Americans because of Bert Sugar. The majority of real boxing fans and historians knew Bert was an entertainer. This did mean he had zero knowledge and it didnt\doesnt mean every American bought all his lip service either. Why did nationality even need to be dragged into this....that is the question. :-(
EXACTLY! Nice to see somebody here gets what Bert was about. He consciously emulated an older era where boxing writers were characters, people who were immersed in the CULTURE of the sport, and indeed part of it. I would take someone like Sugar over a talentless hack like Max Kellerman any day.
I prefer colourful characters in boxing like Bert Sugar than the trashy experts in the UFC like Joe Rogan.
Well, here's a ringside report saying " In the third, Pep won all three scorecards without landing a punch." It would make sense Pep had no trouble winning the third, since his oponnent had broken his left hand in the 2nd rd. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mnmower/clip/graves_jackie_bio.htm
A highly over rated dinosauer who looked and acted like a cartoon character. Here in NYC,he was looked upon as a c-rated wanna be actor plying his trade elsewhere but not in this city.
If you want colourful characters, watch cartoons. Bert Sugar was neither a serious ****yst nor commentator. He always preferred stories and myths to ****ysis and reasoned argument. Fine if you like that sort of stuff, but if you are actually interested in establishing the reality of things, of working out whats happened, and why, there are far better sources of information. He is more an entertaining storyteller, not to be taken too seriously.
This is very accurate. I enjoyed Bert Sugar as part of the "entertainment" in the boxing scene, but never as someone who was particularly careful with facts. I can't think of anyone else who had his particular role in the sport. BS? You bet he did. But if you were knowledgeable about the sport, you could smile at his comments. You didn't confuse him with a top trainer or experienced ****yst. In the end he probably sold a lot of "the allure of the fight game" to people- inspiring their interest.
