is that his only claim to fame? not only that but he was about 16 lbs heavier than srr. dont get me wrong i think lamotta was a great fighter but i just want some input on his being either overated or underated. he did win some great fights and took out some tough guys. imagine a middleweight koing satterfield thats incredible especially since they say lamotta had no big punching power.
He beat some guy named Cerdan... or doesn't that count? I think he is generally underrated. Plus, to have even a bit of his marbles, at this age, after the wars he endured... that's just inhuman.
Both. Hes overrated as some inhuman superman based on the movie. And underrated because nowadays a lot of people think he was a face first brawler with no defense, speed, or punching power. When in fact he had a ton of stamina (he was compared to Harry Greb early in his career), had very subtle defensive skills, an excellent and underrated jab, and he was a terrific bodypuncher (one of the best ever, and its to the body where his power punches fell). Look at the guys he fought that nobody else and the guys who wanted nothing to do with him. Zale and Graziano are considered legendary tough men and they literally would have crossed the street if they saw LaMotta coming their way. They certainly did it professionally. Another reason he is underrated today is that we dont really have any film of him in his prime. He was already past his best when he fought Cerdan and once he won the championship he went downhill pretty quick.
Massively overrated, Hopkins when fighting 160lb men who started at lower weights was accused of fighting WWs, but Lamotta fought 140-147lb men at the MW limit, the weight advantage was just epic. The best men who weighed 155lb+ all beat him, Marshall said all the best of the Murderer's Row would beat him after beating him
I think he's rated right where he should be. He had a nice reign, but i keep him away from my creme de la creme mw's for various reasons.
