Geez, now I`m really getting steamed. Talent aside, did anyone in history fight with more hear, pride and quiet dignity than Joe Frazier ? Get f...n real, he beat THE man for the title. That one victory alone earns him big time history status. If all fighters had half of `Smokin` Joe`s heart and balls (not to mention his left hook) Boxing would be at the top of the charts sportwise This has to be the most non-sensical post ever...

Patterson, does anyone think he would have lasted 6 rds with Frazier ? Prime Frazier was `71` edition, that really takes Norton and Shavers out of the mix. Prime Frazier beats them both IMO. Sahvers too limited, even with his big punch. Frazier crowds him and doesn`t give him puching room, plus Shavers chin was shaky as well. In phonebooth warfare, Frazier is too much for Norton, Shavers and Patterson...

Great fighter, but not as great as some think. He did something few can do, win Olympic Gold and Heavyweight title. He is competitive in any era. Fight with Foreman gets him grief from some, but he walked right in overconfident on Foreman. Style wise Foreman probably always beats him, but that particular beating, due to ref not stoping it fast enough, hurt his image, wrongly. Toughness wise frazier is right there with anyone.

    I think it's a lot of revisionism.

Foreman had his critics, some of them pretty vocal, but to not 'think much' of a guy who is 40-0 with 37 KO's with good amateur pedigree is unbelievably stupid. Especially considering Joe would be coming right at him.

I've watched the fight dozens of times, and there is nothing which suggests to me that Frazier on any other night would have won. He was at a loss as to how to defend against Foreman's punches, and probably always would be.

I think that the Frazier camp knew George was good but they didnt know how uncommonly powerful he was. Nobody did.

Who were the best fighters Foreman faced leading up to his title shot?

Why is this thread even made? Anybody that has followed Frazier's(RIP) career and watched his fights know he's no where near a Fraud. It's sad sometimes how people underrate some all time greats

Frazier was as tough as they come, and feared nobody. Him and his camp greatly underestimated the sheer size and strength of Foreman, and payed dearly for it.

That's a fair enough point. If people want to say that Frazier and his camp underestimated Foreman somewhat, or as you state, just didn't know the force with which he could hit, then that's fine by me.

I just think it's become too accepted, without seriously thinking about it, that Frazier was woefully unprepared or that he took Foreman for granted.
It's doing Joe a disservice as much as it is Foreman.
I don't think it's a crutch that should be leaned on too heavily.

    Even adding to this thread,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    is a disgrace.

Who would ever think of anything 'so ridiculous'

And Thank God for CLOVERLAY, INC.

without them, Joe Frazier would have faded from the boxing scene in 1965.
