We have important matters to discuss.

Is Joe Louis technically unevolved, or is he up to modern standards?

Well, since he had an arsenal of punches, and most guys these days get by on one or at most two, I would say in that respect he is above par.

His footwork could be mechanical, but he knew the fundamentals, so again, in that respect he would be ahead of a lot of guys.

He does fight slightly differently from modern fighters.

That doesn't make him unevolved though

Which division? Pretty sure he'd be a Welterweight by modern standards, with modern scientific training he could maybe go up to Super Welterweight, and most of the guys he fought would be Super Bantamweights by modern standards

Also, if we're talking about the pure technical side of boxing, Louis is beyond modern, beyond what I can see in the foreseeable future. Joe Louis was boxing incarnated. It hasn't, and it probably won't get much better than Louis.

The only big guys Louis fought were stupid cavemen found in a russian ice pit. They didn't even know to close their fist when they punched. So glad we have big men with skills as champions in modern times, like Deontay Wilder, Bermane Stiverne, and Nikolai Valuev.

Louis is the gold standard of technical perfection in everything but defense...balance, speed, power, timing a thing of beauty to watch

He's fine by way of me, but what do I know? It's all up to what the "committee" thinks.

Would you hand on heart pick Joe Louis to beat Vitali Klitschko?

He’s the greatest puncher of all time, and those mechanics cannot be seen as outdated.

I’m not so sure he’d rule over today’s heavies with an iron fist as they are some huge dudes that are not completely unathletic, and I think he’d have his hands full at cruiserweight as well, but to think he wouldn’t be a great champion because the game has passed him by? That would be idiotic at best.
