By appropriately rigorous standards, no. With the abysmally low standards of the Boxing Hall Of Fame, probably yes.
Ward was in so much trouble that fight, he actually tried to double leg Sergey and get it to the mat. And let’s just say Ward’s demeanor was COMPLETELY different in the rematch (Way more aggressive angry) along with having back acne. Also this strange new found pop he had in his punches. Had either one of these fights been on neutral ground, say like Saudi, and with a non biased referee with competent neutral judges and last but not least strict testing (Or at least a level playing field in that area) then There is no doubt Sergey is thoroughly beating Ward. But it is what it is. We know who’s the real victor in fight #1. And yes Krusher is no doubt a HOFer. Around the time of the Pascal fights and a little before them… Kovalev was H2H top 3 Light Heavyweight ever.
Yeah, but some stuff happened later that hurt his legacy. Some of it not his fault, some of it his fault. So probably won't get the credit. First Ward fight got done over. But partly Duva's fault for putting him in that disadvantage when he was champion. Second fight he was probably losing regardless of dodgy stoppage. The decision to go with Snake Jackson was insane, thanks Duva again for that, but Kovalev dropped the ball too with his training etc. Canelo fight he was manipulated and handicapped but he took the money and got a bad KO loss to a MW on his record. The PED thing after that. Maybe it was the first time he did it as a reaction to dealing with Clenelo, but maybe he's done it before, it throws a shadow over his career of course. Then all this weird stuff at cruiserweight when he's not even close to a cruiser naturally, a lanky guy 6ft tall. Probably get KO'd badly up there eventually if he keeps going. Sad end, but there were some good times.
Yes. Did he have a dominant reign? Yes. He was robbed in the first Ward fight. All the losses since then shouldn't diminish how good he was once upon a time.
I said in 2015 when a similar question was posed that if he beat/destroyed Ward like he had done mostly everyone else up to that point then cleared out the LHW division and turned back the next generation after his, I think he would be. We are now in 2024 9 years later and can look back on pretty much his entire career......................no he is not HOF worthy. He fell off a cliff, tumbled down it, they called paramedics but no one came out except an old mountain man who poured an entire bottle of wild turkey down his throat then left. He then stumbled back to his feet and has stumbled ever since. That is what his career has become
yes. but def can understand those who'll dissagree. 3 time world champion gets him marvin johnson reasons. his dominance in his era against other champions, former world champions, and fighters who would become champions, fought 3 hall of famers. his wins on paper and in the ring were excellent. how can we not agree...becasue 175 in this era is hard to quantify who or how good every/anyone was. campillo, cloud, cleverly are either solid or poor? is hopkins at 175 great or just a true veteran who simply out-knoweldged younger inexpereinced fighters? is getting beat by canelo, eleider proof that he was a massive bully who's cadillac had fallen apart at the seams but his dominance and brutal finishes just made people ignore his glaring weaknesses? im fine with him being in the hall.
He had a HOF-level absolute peak. Probably better than guys who've made it recently, like Cotto, Bradley, Froch, Corrales, Hatton, etc. The resume is a bit thin compared to great light heavyweights and there was a dramatic decline, but I have no problem if he makes it.
