Pac is probably the most popular foreign boxer in many countries but that still does not make him "mainstream"!
if you are defining it as being popular to the fans and non-fans of the sport, then it could probably be NO. But his popularity worldwide to those who knows the sport of boxing, cannot be questioned, especially now that he's commercially promoted (ex. NIKE) and pitching at that Giants game..
More so than most boxers but still not widely knowen. If I was to ask people I know to name active boxers they'd probally name Hatton, Mayweather and Pacquiao (because of Hatton) and maybe Haye and Froch. Sadly boxing is below a lot of other sports in terms of popularity.
Nope. And neither was Oscar. Nor Floyd. Nor Roy. Most of my non-boxing fan friends wouldn't know who they were. Since I started following the sport, I can't think of a non-HW mainstream boxer who would have recognition amongst the general public. Here's the complete list. Ali Frazier (briefly, then faded) Foreman Tyson. Iron Mike was the last.
Im working here in Norway and I have 2 British colleagues, and I asked them about Pacquiao and Hatton.. Colleague #1: Me: You know Ricky Hatton? Brit1: Huh??? Is he playing for Manchester United??? Me: You know Manny Pacquiao? Brit!: I heard of him, that very good Asian boxer..(atleast he knows he's asian) Colleague#2 Me: You know Rciky Hatton? Brit2: Yeah, He's very good but he lost to that american guy Roy Jones!!! LOL Me: You know Manny Pacquiao? Brit2: Yeah, the Filipino boxer who is now the P4P king.. My point, they know pac better than Hatton..Not sure if they have seen pac fight but they surely heard about his greatness...
^^ interesting, this could be a fun exercise, everyone ask someone you know if they know who Manny Pacquiao is and post their response.
I asked them coz I thought they know Hatton that well and maybe I could have a bet with them...But dang, what a disappoinment!!!!:---(
NO offense but that sounds made up If your collegues are boxing fans, then it's understandable but very few people outside of boxing circles even know what "PFP" means.
